For anyone who listens to podcasts (and I know it’s a ton), here are some recommendations from my recent listening:
A TRADITION OF VIOLENCE - A historic look back at the LAPD’s corrupt abuses and how they persist even today. Dark and disturbing to anyone with a conscious.
WILDER- A deep dive into all things Laura Ingalls Wilder, particularly focusing on its controversial impact given that it’s essentially a fictional tale (never shelved, ever, as a biography). As a massive LITTLE HOUSE fan, this was revealing.
DREAMTOWN: THE STORY OF ADELANTO - What may seem like a local story about a town about a two hour drive from LA is really what is happening in a ton of small towns across the US: a fight for power, against corruption and (this time ‘round) ultimately about pot.
BIG SUGAR - Not a subtle title. It is what it implies: a deep dive into the sugar industry, its lobby and how it got to be one of the most powerful voices in American government.
THE RETRIEVALS - From Serial productions. Follows the case of a nurse at Yale who had a Fentanyl addiction. She worked an IVF ward at Yale, yet replaced fentanyl (which is used in small doses to ease pain in those going through IVF) with saline. Many, MANY complained about the pain, suffering and complications patients had after the fact. Heartbreaking.
BELIVE IN MAGIC - A woman who parlayed her daughter’s apparent health troubles (essentially a Münchausen syndrome by proxy) into a huge non-profit in England. But it was short lived and so was her daughter. Not a murder podcast, but something equally more troubling.
A VERY BRITISH CULT - From their advert: In this eighteen-month investigation for the BBC, journalist Catrin Nye and her team expose control, intimidation and fear at a mysterious life coaching company taking over people’s lives and ripping families apart.
Me: Fascinating and disturbing!
LOVE, JANESSA - Another Brit podcast, this time about the sex trade. Apparently, undesirable people got ahold of someone’s picture and used it to sell men on being able to date her all over the world. Some spent upward of over a half-million on what was essentially a dream.
RED ELVIS - I’ll just link to the iHeart website. The story, told by his daughter, is too crazy but real to mix up. You can read about it here.
