For anyone who listens to podcasts (and I know it’s a ton), here are some recommendations from my recent listening:

A TRADITION OF VIOLENCE - A historic look back at the LAPD’s corrupt abuses and how they persist even today.  Dark and disturbing to anyone with a conscious.

WILDER- A deep dive into all things Laura Ingalls Wilder, particularly focusing on its controversial impact given that it’s essentially a fictional tale (never shelved, ever, as a biography).  As a massive LITTLE HOUSE fan, this was revealing.

DREAMTOWN: THE STORY OF ADELANTO - What may seem like a local story about a town about a two hour drive from LA is really what is happening in a ton of small towns across the US: a fight for power, against corruption and (this time ‘round) ultimately about pot.

BIG SUGAR - Not a subtle title.  It is what it implies: a deep dive into the sugar industry, its lobby and how it got to be one of the most powerful voices in American government.

THE RETRIEVALS - From Serial productions.  Follows the case of a nurse at Yale who had a Fentanyl addiction. She worked an IVF ward at Yale,  yet replaced fentanyl (which is used in small doses to ease pain in those going through IVF) with saline. Many, MANY complained about the pain, suffering and complications patients had after the fact. Heartbreaking.

BELIVE IN MAGIC - A woman who parlayed her daughter’s apparent health troubles (essentially a Münchausen syndrome by proxy) into a huge non-profit in England. But it was short lived and so was her daughter. Not a murder podcast, but something equally more troubling.

A VERY BRITISH CULT - From their advert: In this eighteen-month investigation for the BBC, journalist Catrin Nye and her team expose control, intimidation and fear at a mysterious life coaching company taking over people’s lives and ripping families apart.

Me: Fascinating and disturbing!

LOVE, JANESSA - Another Brit podcast, this time about the sex trade.  Apparently, undesirable people got ahold of someone’s picture and used it to sell men on being able to date her all over the world.  Some spent upward of over a half-million on what was essentially a dream.

RED ELVIS - I’ll just link to the iHeart website. The story, told by his daughter, is too crazy but real to mix up.  You can read about it here

Thanks, Matt.  I've been getting into a rut of The Greatest Generation and Five Thirty Eight, with occasional dips back into WTF when the guest seems interesting.  Definitely need some new talkings.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A few years ago, I was curious about how fictionalized the tv show was, and was majorly surprised. I expected it to be about 75% fiction, but it was more like 95%!

For one thing, they only lived in Walnut Grove for two years, before they moved from Minnesota to Iowa.

I might add a few of my own recommendations later, if that's okay.

GONE SOUTH- Season One: Who killed Margaret Coon; Season Two: The
Dixie Mafia
A true crime series that delves into a coupe of unsolved mysteries set down
in southern Mississippi. Very engrossing. I hope a Season Three is in the
works

Then I make my way thru Dana Carvey and David Spade’s FLY ON THE
WALL and CONAN O’BRIEN NEEDS A FRIEND.

REVEAL had a multi episode story a year or so back titled MISSISSIPPI
GODDAMN. From the description: “Billey Joe Johnson Jr. was a high school
football star headed for the big time. Then, early one morning in 2008, the
Black teenager died during a traffic stop with a White deputy. His family’s
been searching for answers ever since.” Very interesting.

I may give that WILDER one a listen.

100%.  Everyone should feel free to recommend podcasts they enjoy.

CHINWAG a look into the paranormal hosted by actor Paul Giamatti(believer) and professor Stephen Asma(skeptic). A lot of fun.

You Made it Weird, an interview pod hosted by comedian Pete Holmes. Also a lot of fun.

Smartless hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes & Will Arnett. An hilarious celebrity interview pod.

You're Wrong About. Every week the host reconsiders a person or event that's been miscast in the public imagination.

Astonishing Legends and Darkness Radio two different shows about the paranormal. Dave Schrader, who co-hosts the latter, also hosted the tv show THE HOLZER FILES, which I recommend.

There's also Mysterious Radio, but I mainly use iTunes for podcasts, and it hasn't been updated on there since last November.

Basic Brewing Radio a show based out of Arkansas about homebrewing and craftbrewing. They do a show at the end of the year where people send in their own brewing disaster story, and some are actually hilarious.
There's also Basic Brewing Video (@basicbrewing) on Youtube, and they are NOT video versions of the podcast.

Food Court with Richard Blais Another possibly defunct show (no new episodes since December on iTunes), but there are more than enough episodes to make it worth listening to. Chef Blais and others (sometimes other chefs debate over such weighty topics as whether ketchup is better than mustard, if crunchy tacos are better than soft, if chili is better with or without beans, or if pineapple belongs on pizza.

Fall of Civilizations Podcast is often hauntingly beautiful. Describes the decline and fall of a different world civilization each episode.

I listened to SMARTLESS for months. Then stopped and listened to
something else and when I tried to go back to SMARTLESS, I couldn’t. Just
couldn’t get back into it.

Brian: yeah, I had a similar experience.  I think either it had gotten show-bizzy smarmy in the intervening months or just coming out of the pandemic it no longer felt essential.

BEHIND THE BASTARDS - funny, but fact-based (from an openly liberal host) biographical sketches of people who have note-worthy and negative contributions to history -- surprisingly revealing and thought provoking. Favorites for me have been the looks at Alex Jones and Jack Welch.

ULTRA - Rachel Maddow's documentary podcast about 1930's American politics and a failed Department of Justice effort to convict multiple exposed Nazi collaborators who were seated in the US Congress.

AMERICAN PSYOP - a true-mystery podcast about the son of General Wesley Clark and how he experienced an inexplicable rise and fall in Hollywood and as a spokesperson for a veteran's group --an experience that, in retrospect, looks like he was the target of an enemy covert psychiatric-spy-operation. But who did it and why? Very interesting, if inconclusive, paranoid mystery/adventure.

DON'T QUILL THE MESSENGER - a podcast featuring interviews with people interested in the Shakespeare Authorship mystery. It's hit and miss in that some episodes are more informative than others, but it's almost always a fun listen.

Thanks for the ULTRA recommendation, Mark.  Just finished.  Really great storytelling about a period of history that I know just enough to get me in trouble, but not the deep dive this podcast took.  AMERICAN PSYOP will more than likely be next up.
