Mark, just in case you’re wondering…I started AMERICAN PSYOP. It was…a difficult first ep for me. I lasted about 15 minutes and then hit pause. It felt like a long form interview with a subject that I don’t find particularly interesting and a host/interviewer who didn’t set up the premise of the series well. Initial impressions. I may go back to it, but it’s not my normal cup o’ tea.

Same…kinda. I’ve found that SMARTLESS is best taken in small doses and (like WTF for me) pick and choose which subjects I find interesting. What got me was that binging it felt like a love fest. They fawn over everyone. There’s no serious discussion that doesn’t end in “you’re the best” which Maron never does. I love all three actors for various reasons, although Arnett grates on me in the “anxious comedian” way in which he’s always got to be the center of attention. That’s why the American version of Lego Masters is one I may stop altogether, yet I still love the Aussie version.
All that said? Watch the six ep HBO documentary series about SMARTLESS. It follows them on their first tour in 2022. Shot in black and white, it’s really pretty amazing. I don’t see it getting a lot of pop, but it’s well worth watching. Funny, thoughtful, incisive. Highly recommended.

Matt, I was curious and slightly afraid you might feel that way about AMERICAN PSYOP. I think it is not a good follow up to ULTRA which was so thoroughly fact checked. PSYOP is like a paranoid political thriller with a surfer dude at the center. The series made me feel what a genuine PSYOP might feel like. But it also leaves some questions unanswered. If you didn’t like ep 1, I can’t recommend the rest!

Strike Force Five. It’s Kimmel, Colbert, Fallon, Myers and Oliver. They started it so they could get sponsored and pay their respective staff during the writers’ strike. I think it’s great that these 5 competitors can get together and have fun with it. Fallon is BY FAR the weakest link here. He constantly sounds like some burnt-out stoner from the 90s and sounds like his mouth is full of gummies when he talks. It’s a lot of fun and has some really good laughs too.
The 5th episode is one of the absolute funniest things I’ve ever listened to. Fallon is the “host” of the episode and to say he’s the doofus of the group is a massive understatement. That’s one of the greatest things I’ve ever heard. Even if you don’t listen to any of the other episodes, you owe it to yourself to hear this one. Fallon’s ineptitude is on full display and they all call him out on it repeatedly. Absolutely hysterical. They have a Part 2 with the 11th episode and while not start-to-finish as funny, it probably has the funniest moment between the two.
Ryan Renyolds is effectively the show’s sponsor and he does very funny ads throughout, as well.
This podcast is recommended with the highest honors I can possibly give it. I may very well go back and listen to it again. So much fun.

Agreed! Loved it. I was crying from laughter throughout Ep 5. To hear all of them riff off each other, much of it at Fallon’s expense, is priceless.

I recall at the time they were doing these episodes in September, Rolling Stone had a scathing article about his bad temper and being drunk a lot at work.

Couple more from me…
AGENT OF BETRAYAL: THE DOUBLE LIFE OF ROBERT HANSON - Produced by CBS news and chock full of interviews, it tells the story of Hanson who was an FBI agent with the highest access to American secrets who sold many of them to the Russians throughout the Cold War and beyond. I only knew the basics, but this eight episode series is a deep dive. Fascinating.
SMOKESCREEN - This recommendation isn’t so much for a single story or podcast, but a series that is starting its seventh season. The very basic idea is how people can throw up a “smokescreen” to cover their actions, often highly illegal. The topics discussed are wide ranging. Season 1 deals with a man who sells himself as a priest who nevertheless was never ordained. S3 details the corruption of LA City Councilman Jose Huizar and how this first ever elected Latino on City Council betrayed his own people for greed and power. S4 is about puppy mills and the lengths some owners go to sell themselves as small time breeders when they are anything but. S6 is about Texas Ranger James Holland who abuses his very substantial power to frame and help incarcerate innocents for decades. As you can tell, the pod tells a wide variety of stories under the same banner and each of them are highly binge-worthy. I should know as I’ve zipped through nearly every season over the past couple of months. Excellent and HIGHLY recommended!

Three off the top of my head:
THE DANA GOULD HOUR: This was my gateway drug into podcasts. Dana Gould is one of my favorite standup comics as well as a former writer for THE SIMPSONS. Gould and his various guests discuss horror movies, comedy, politics, true crime, etc (BTW, "HOUR" is a misnomer. I think the shortest episode I ever listened to was 90 minutes. A few episodes are over three hours!).
YOU MUST REMEMBER THIS hosted by film critic and historian Karina Longworth. Her tagline describes it better than I could: "The secret and sometimes forgotten history of Hollywood's first century".
COCAINE AND RHINESTONES hosted by Tyler Mahan Coe discusses the history of country music and the artists who made it. The most recent season was about George Jones. Earlier seasons talk about various artists. The Spade Cooley episode is particularly chilling.

Karina Longworth is a genius. There's no other word for her. I don't even like movies and have seen maybe 10% of what she talks about, but every season is fascinating.

You don’t like movies as a general rule or don’t like the movies Karina Longworth covers, but like her specifically?
If it’s movies in general, that would be a first for me to hear as I’ve never run into anyone who says outright that they dislike any and all movies no matter the story, genre, actor or director. “I don’t like movies” is something I have never heard. Ever!

I don't care for sitting down and watching a whole movie, generally! I usually just wind up reading about them. Exceptions made for weird stuff like The Love Witch and ornate stuff like Kubrick, but most of the time they're just not for me.
