Was flicking through the latest Marvel Previews and noticed they are putting out facsimile editions of X-Men 141 and 142. Both the credits read written by Claremont and Byrne, penciled and cover by JB.
Now when I was a dumb kid, I didn't read the signature on 142 saying Austin but you'd think the people at Marvel would know this stuff.
(I know JB often says that people said they liked his art around this time when what they meant was Austin's inks over his pencils)

Having seen some great pencils by Terry, including those covers, I always wondered why he got type cast as an inker. Any info in this regards would be appreciated.

I read an interview once where Austin said, basically, that he had no real ambition do to penciling jobs other than some covers.
Also, mentioning Austin and #142, he said he drew some background buildings in the scene where a Sentinel slumps into a building after being zapped by Storm.

I thought it was #122 where he did a lot of backgrounds (and the graffiti on same).
I guess the thing about Terry Austin that makes me not the greatest admirer is the occasional stiffness, sort of like Marshall Rogers or even Don Perlin in terms of pencils, and a different kind of stiffness in inking. I like him best doing something a bit cartoony-rubbery.
The facsimiles I most want from X-Men would be #94 & 95! I'll never get them again at current prices and would go with Giant-Size #1 fac. There are already choices of collected volumes of just #141 & 142, even comic-book sized. If I didn't already have them I'd probably go for #107-109 (as I known they just did #101), especially #109 for a great single issue. Sometimes I wonder at the knowledge of those in charge of these facsimile choices, then other times they will get it absolutely right!

Yes Rebecca, he did that #122 graffiti also.
Of course Austin also inserted the infamous Popeye and Phantom Stranger in issue #125.

I'm pretty sure the Phantom Stranger would want to have been there but Popeye's presence seems inexplicable so must have just been someone going to a costume party (continuity saved). :^)
Terry Austin seemed the best inker for Art Adams and Brian Bolland (other than themselves anyway), and lovely to see on Alex Toth too!

I seem to recall JB did draw a cover for X-Men 142, but it
wasn't used for whatever reason. If you google "unused
Byrne X-Men 142 cover" images of it will pop up.

That is a good Austin cover, seems to be closely based on the YERRRRGH! panel inside that issue, but it does kind of lessen the shock of that moment when it occurs in the story.
Hmm, someone could put together a nice coffee table book of just unused comics covers... there's one at least as early as X-Men #10 introducing Ka-Zar, and I'm sure most people have seen the unused Steve Ditko cover for the the first Spider-Man in Amazing Fantasy...
No wait, they'd probably over-color them all in super shiny computer-airbrush style, bleh.

JB's unused X-Men 142 cover was rejected by Shooter, IIRC, because of the "giant hand". It was another example of his "whim of iron" that forced a new cover to be drawn and (again, IIRC) the decision came too late for JB to draw the new cover.
