Through my early teens (in the early 80s) there was a great event called the Chicago Minicon. I remember John Byrne tabling there once and I have two big regrets about our brief interaction. One is that I didn’t buy any original art pages, which went for a pittance compared to what they'’re worth today. But what brings me here is my second regret, which is that I had some silly question, a thinly veiled criticism really, about how JB drew the Thing’s fingers. I had access to a comics master, whose books thrilled me, truly, thrilled, whose labors brought me so much pleasure, and instead of telling him that, thanking him profusely for the enormous joy he’d brought into the world, I said something negative. What a little turd! I’m sorry, John. I signed up to this forum to say so and to offer my gratitude, 40-something years late, for all the fun I’'ve had reading your comics. Thank you, sir. Thank you so much! Moments from those comics are still with me after all this time, because you made me feel things. It won’t surprise you to learn that I grew up on the receiving end of a certain amount of negativity and criticism. I mention this not to excuse myself but to say your work gave me not only an escape from that, but a glimpse of people facing the world with courage and kindness and good humor. Thanks, Mr. Byrne.
