I was a Marvel kid at the time of the MOS reboot -- and it was a great 'in' for me with regards to the world of DC, a perfect jumping on point, as I'm sure it was for many other Marvel readers.
How DC handled the post-crisis thing product wide was confusing nonetheless. Superman was a total reboot -- easy to understand. Wonder Woman got a reboot, but with a totally new origin. Batman didn't appear to be rebooted, but you had weird stuff like Jason Todd's origin being rewritten.

I loved Crisis as a kid it seemed so exciting but man, did DC lose the thread on it FAST.
The Superman reboot was the highlight for me by a mile with Wally as the Flash next. These books seemed to take seriously the conceit that EVERYTHING had changed.
Unfortunately Crisis really messed with Teen Titans and Legion (my two favorite DC books pre-crisis.

I'm not sure that you read that correctly, Sheila.
Please enlighten.

• And now the biggie. When Dick Giordano called to offer me Superman, I wish I’d said no.************** Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think you were still on Fantastic Four when that happened. Would you have stayed on FF if you hadn’t gone to do Superman? And if so, how long do you think you’d have stayed on FF?

The mention of COIE turns me into Moe Howard
"Crisis On Infinite Earths!?!?!?!??!?"
"...slowly I turn......"
I hate to use profanity but........
How in the world can you FUCK UP the entire history of Hawkman?
The simple solution was in front of DC Editorial staff: The Flash and Green Lantern
I'm sorry folks. Almost 40 years later, this shit still grinds my gears.
This leads to a question for JB:
When you had Hawkman and Hawkgirl appear in ACTION COMICS, did you see them as Katar and Shayera Hol or the whoever the (Thanagarian person) posing as him?
Thanks!

Didn’t even know about the poser!Hawkman was one of the coolest characters of the Silver Age. I still have vivid memories of picking up his first BRAVE AND BOLD appearance. O, the Joe Kubert art! And the first page scared the willies out of me! Unfortunately, characters that cool tend to attract the wrong people, trying to hitch their wagons to that star.

I am utterly mystified why people like Secret Wars••• Just noticed this. The “success” of SECRET WARS can be largely attributed to two factors: First, the DSM, where the series was perceived as an “event”, and issues were ordered in greatly inflated numbers. (I wonder how many of them still languish in back issue boxes?) Keep in mind, since product shipped to the DSM was non-returnable, Publishers counted them as sales. This could not be done with newsstand sales, that had to wait for the returns to calculate final numbers. Second, younger fans loved the wall-to-wall superheroes. They were able to get a much bigger bang for their (limited) bucks. (Mike Higgins, Carlin’s assistant editor, went so far as to cross-reference the sales on Marvel’s other books at the time, and discovered the main titles, those starring characters featured in SW, had lost sales that added up to the numbers on SW. Robbing Peter to pay Paul, in other words.)

This reminds me of what, JB, you regularly quote from Stan Lee: never give the fans what they think they want.

Guilty! At the time, anyway. Add to that the Mike Zeck art (I didn't know his work at the time, but I became a fan at first look), and I was ON BOARD. Now Secret Wars II? Blech.

The wall-to-wall superheroes was what I liked about Secret Wars. This was Marvel UK's reprinted version though -- in the UK there was a real dearth of Marvel titles. You might get Hulk or Spider-Man with some back up stories of Daredevil or Micronauts, but you didn't have the ability to pick from the full gamut of titles.
Secret Wars was like a buffet with all my favourite foods. Looking back I can see that some of the criticisms are/were valid, but at the time I just enjoyed the hell out of it.
