For me, the characterisation in Secret Wars was my main bug bear, although
I had major problems with the plot & script as well.
I just didn’t feel people acted as they did in their series. & then, towards the
end, it seemed like there were things happening in a manner that clearly
showed that Shooter had forgotten he needed to do things based on what
was said/shown when people returned a year previous.

All in all, I felt it was a mess.

If Mike Zeck had not absolutely nailed that cover to issue number 1, I would
not have tried it. As it is, I lasted 2 issues. I was cheap and stingy as a
comic buying lad— mini series were suspicious by their very nature in my
eyes.

But that cover. Wow.

Edit: spellcheck switched “Zeck” to “Zucker” (!?)

Funny that Jim Shooter established that "one story per issue" edict during your CAPTAIN AMERICA run, when I think of him as the guy who initiated 12-part stories with the Korvac Saga, SECRET WARS I & II, with extended storylines going back to his LEGION days.

I enjoyed the art and the idea of the "new" (black) costume for Spider-Man but other than that I never saw the appeal of Secret Wars. It's kind of like the Avengers/Defenders War, an overly simple story that doesn't live among the better stuff Marvel had done/was doing at the time. I gave up on Secret Wars II after issue 2.

I was (am?) a True Believer in the the black costume. When I first saw ASM
252 and MTU 141 on the spinner rack my mind was blown in a way I could
never conceive. That probably hit me harder than just about anything I ever
read in a comic book before. The shock. The awe. How could they change
Spider-Man’s costume? WHY did it change? That’s Spider-Man!! I couldn’t
wait to get home and read those books. And it looked so friggin’ COOL. Still
does. And when drawn by the right artists, one of the best costumes in
comics. (Yes, our host is one of them). I totally dig the original costume but
the black one hit me at just the right age and it just never let go.

SECRET WARS is something that makes me glad I stopped reading comicbooks a few years before it came out.

To this day, I've never read past issue #3 of Secret Wars.
Even Zeck's art wasn't enough to save that dreck. Speaking
of which, I'm not sure if Zeck's art improved as the
series went along, but I felt he really rushed through
some of those early pages.

What made you feel like he drew them at a faster pace than he normally
would?

Rushed! There’s that word again. And with it comes the absurd notion that it is possible to look at any piece of art and tell how long it took to produce.

Some artists draw fast, some slowly. But the actual amount of time the pencil is touching the paper can rarely be judged by the resulting image.

A screw up at DC caused my OMAC project to be released three months later than had originally been planned. As a result, several projects that I had drawn over the previous six months or more hit the stands at the same time. RUSHED cried the internet, oblivious to the production schedule. Obviously I was doing too much!

Go on. Tell me OMAC looks “rushed”!

Shows how subjective this kind of thing is. I thought Zeck's art was great and I've been a fan ever since.

Seeing Galactus mixed in with the villains—thanks a lot!—reminds me of something I thought at the time. The Beyonder was a totally superfluous character. There were already a small swarm of beings who could have fulfilled his role, and Galactus was one of them.

I'm remembering when Marvel was using Mike's art and mine as clip-art, our drawings popping up on all kinds of promotional material and merchandise.

We suggested that perhaps we should be getting PAID for this use, but the bean counters at Marvel said there was no way they could keep track. We were entitled to do so ourselves, tho, and submit appropriate vouchers.

Cut to a few decades later, Marvel is owned my Disney, and Disney is beyond fastidious in keeping track of every usage. Result, I get royalty checks sometimes for under a buck!

(Thank you Peggy Lee!)
