Had dogs all my life, on my fourth rescue dog since being
married, the sad loss when we have to say goodbye is far
outweighed by the love and joy they bring whilst with us.
So sorry for your loss Larry.

Deepest of condolences, it truly is gut wrenching having to say goodbye. Rex is our third Pug and my 6th dog. Everyone of them was truly a gift and a blessing! Nothing loves as true as a dog!

One of the hardest thing a pet owner does is knowing when they need to let their loved go and then making the decision to end their pain. Last year at about this time my wife and I had to make the decision to let one of our cats go. We know it was the right thing to do, but our hearts broke.

My deepest condolences in your loss.  The pain will eventually ease and fade away, but the love never will.

Sorry to hear, Larry. It’s one of the hardest things ever, for sure.

Oof, I was avoiding this thread for obvious reasons, but I was just informed
my sister’s black lab Madigan has reached the end of his nearly 14-year run.
He was the last remaining family pet who knew our Dad, who passed
away a few months after Mad’s adoption. And he was my favorite nephew.

Just a few weeks ago, we had to put down our cat Bitts due
to a UTI. He's very missed.

We had a lot of dogs and cats growing up.  When my mom passed a couple years ago I asked her to tell Buster, my first dog, that I missed him.  He had to be put down in 1983.  I miss him still.  Not that I don't miss all of them.  But that first pet loss hurts the most.  I was woefully unprepared for the loss of my best friend.  I can sympathize with your daughter.

Last weekend was traumatic.

Ben, our much loved JRT for almost 17 years, had a seizure on Sunday afternoon. I put him on his bed, made him as comfortable as possible and called the vets, but while we were preparing to get him there, he passed away.

Even though he was an old dog, deaf and almost blind, it was absolutely devastating. I couldn't sleep for two or three days afterwards, and have found myself tearing up at random moments all week. It's only now that I realise how much worse his end could have been, rather than slipping away on his bed, in his home, in the company of his human mum and dad. I still find myself thinking that I hear him around the house and have woke up at least twice this week preparing to take him for a walk. For a little dog, he was a huge presence in our home.

I buried him along with his favourite ball in an area of the garden where he used to soak up the sun.

Sincerest condolences. Our Boston is 14 and has been
showing it for awhile, so I fear we'll be going through the
same thing soon. My wife will be *devastated*, as he is
her first "her" dog (the family pets in her childhood were
always more her father's dog). Not looking forward to this
at all.

My dog and my cat are both around 14. Aside from Gwynne having a reduced ability to “hold it” requiring two trips into the back yard, neither are showing pronounced signs of their advanced age. Which will, of course, only make their ends that’s much harder.

Truly sorry for the loss and condolences to all. I know how terrible that feels - I lost my own beloved Peaches four weeks ago and the sadness still grips me. I still have that second of reflex memory that she's there to greet me when I come home and at other times. Grateful that I was holding her when she passed away. I had her for 15 years and wished I could have had her for another 15.
My family has had dogs that lived to be 20 and 21.
