Denny O'Neil made an interesting observation vis the New Universe. He said it was the first time a company had gone into competition with itself!
Could the same be said about the EPIC line of comics from a few years earlier?

I wouldn't think so. It generally had several differences and goals from the mainstream MU - creator-owned projects, more adult-oriented fare, and more sci-fi and fantasy-geared themes. NU was just Diet MU.

EPIC could not be considered in competition with the rest of Marvel, any more than could be the STAR line. Both were created to appeal to different audiences than the general Marvel fare. More “mature” audiences in the case of EPIC.

It does feel like Shooter was trying to channel Stan Lee or at least his bombast. As a kid, I fell for it. (FWIW I would have fallen for PT Barnum, too.)
