A horrific omnibus of stories done to “mess with John Byrne” would be a
very thick, very pathetic doorstop of a book.

The GLA were intended to be kinda goofy. In some ways I created them as a challenge to the O So Serious segment of fandom.

Worked on me. I remember battling the dueling sentiments of being a Byrne fan and, as a newly arrived midwesterner, being very suspect of the concept.

For those who might be interested:

Mr Immortal — an explorer who found a race of flying, human-like creatures deep in the Amazon jungle. He spied on them for a while, but was caught. The tribal chief decided to punish him with the Curse of Ten Thousand Deaths. Each death would leave him more and more insane until his mind was utterly destroyed.

Dinah Soar (so dubbed by Mr I) — The chieftan’s daughter, who thought her father’s punishment unfair, and followed Mr. I back to civilization, hoping to use her knowledge of his condition to help him recover (more or less) after each resurrection. This was out of the kindness of her heart, not any romantic intentions. She finds his human form utterly repulsive.

Big Bertha — supermodel Ashley Craford, seeking to maintain her nearly anorexic figure she hooked up with a cosmetic engineer who had developed a formula he believed could accomplish just that. Unfortunately, it backfired, and Ashley ended up gaining enormous size and weight by absorbing water from the air. She was able to develop a second formula that allowed her to shed the water (hopefully while near a drain!)

Doorman — A theoretical physicist experimenting with interdimensional portals accidentally transformed himself into one.

Flatman — another scientist, this time a huge admirer of Reed Richards. He was attempting to reproduce the circumstances that had given the FF their powers, but a lab accident (TM) turned his efforts back on him.

There ya go!

Speaking of lazy origins - when I was a teen, I created a character whose origin depicted him discovering a hidden cave containing some macguffin that gave him incredible, godlike powers.

Little did I know at the time just how common variations of that origin were!

Quick question for JB. Was Doorman black and Flat Man gay when you created them? Also, have you heard that Doorman is going to be in the upcoming Wonder Man TV series?

Remembering when Marvel grumbled about my NEXT MEN title, and I said I was planning a series about Theodore Maisin, a spy who collected information by working as a doorman at various embassies around the world.

Yes, THEO MAISIN, SPY DOORMAN!

I had to explain to my unamused wife why I just burst out laughing.
