Okay, the moratorium is lifted—but only in this thread.

Go!

And all the gullible people who think the legal system has been weaponized to persecute him and are completely ignoring all evidence have come out of the woodwork. I have even seen people calling the Democrats faschists, when its clear the people calling them apparently don't understand the meaning of the word.

My uncle made a post on Facebook with a graphic that said "Now MAGA more than ever", and it was really offensive because the American flag was incorporated into the word "MAGA".

At this point, I think Trump could murder someone on live tv while urinating on the flag, and the sheep who follow him would still try to find some way to justify it. Unbelievable.

MAGA is a cult.

What's the emoji for a howl from the abyss?  That's pretty much all I got.

Trump is the Ugly American.* He embodies—and embraces—everything the rest of the world thinks is wrong with this country, including followers who (consciously?) blind themselves to his faults.

sigh

* The origin of this term lies in an episodic novel of the same name. There it refers to an American diplomat who actually is physically unattractive. But it works so well as a portmanteau for America’s failings on the world stage, that it became a metaphor rather than a specific description.

Brian - I have a cult member uncle as well.

He was relatively normal until 2016 and then something snapped and he went nuts.

My Dad was a textbook Ugly American, and my Mom followed his every
lead. By 2019, they were both so disgusted with what had happened to the
Office of the POTUS they voted Democrat for the first time in their lives.

My sister, 60, has somehow fallen under the spell now. We had a discussion
while I drove home from work the other night where I told her directly she
will feel the eyes of distrust and shame upon her should she bandwagon for
the felon.

This is how the Civil War will happen….siblings unable to vouch for siblings
who refuse to admit facts as evidence, thus marking themselves
mentally unfit for daily discourse. I will be sad.

Many years ahead to see how the New York appellate courts review this conviction. Yes, whether Trump wins or loses in November, this one case alone will still play out for many years to come.

Beyond the MAGA freaks, Trump doesn't seem to have any greater support than the typical Republican nominee has had in elections past.

Nonetheless, what originated as a typewriter exercise (remember those?) has become the political standard, but one of pure cowardice: "now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the party." The Republicans in office immediately after Jan.6 had their constitutional power and duty to, after impeachment and conviction, bar Trump from holding office ever again. Not enough "good men" to make that happen. And so, here we are. Now coming to the aid of the party means default backing the nominee. That's business as usual, but Trump is decidedly not. Doesn't seem to matter to the tens of millions of Americans, by no means all MAGA maniacs, who will vote him.

Oh, and what makes it scarier? My uncle and aunt (she's the blood relative) are both retired cops.

My aunt is also onboard the Trump train, but she's not as open or vocal.

This uncle actually said to my face a few years ago "Trump has done more for this country than any President in the past 20 years". I had to resist the urge to say "You mean `to f up the country?', or call him out and ask for an example.

Because all the things Trump and his MAGAotts are giving him credit for are lies, exaggerations (Trump's specialty), or things that either Congress or the previous administration did.

I’d like to add:

should the Republican party present a candidate that I trust, and feel safe
standing behind, with some sort of actual charisma I would be willing to
listen to them.

It's just a classic case of the White House choosing to weaponise the justice department by not using the justice department and instead somehow controlling a state court.*

of course, Donald 'Lock Her Up' Trump is famously against such shenanigans.**

The BBC ran an article airing the view from some Americans living abroad and one Republican-leaning person suggested it was just a bookkeeping error. In which case, he is merely criminally incompetent.

*In case of confusion, this is sarcasm.

**Also sarcasm
