JB, would it be accurate to say that your generation of comicbook creators were still professionals first and fans (at most) second?

No.

To clarify: my “generation” was the last to come into The Biz while much of the Old Guard was still in charge, still mostly driving the bus. But that was changing rapidly, and the more fans-turned-pro who came in, the more true professionalism slipped away. (Did Stan and Jack ever suffer the “Dread Deadline Doom”?)

By the time I came in, the rot was more and more in evidence. Missed deadlines, fill-ins, unexpected reprints. Things we just didn’t see when the songs were more important than the singers.

Do you think your being uninvolved in comicbooks between 1964 and 1970 helped you maintain the primacy of professionalism compared to other of your contemporaries?

I’d attribute that to my upbringing!

If memory serves, I met you 5 times at the Mid-Ohio Con and then an extra special bonus time at Dallas in 2019.  You were always friendly and gracious in your interactions with me.  One of my fondest memories was of you and Gary Cody signing my copy of Next Men 27.  You seemed to be extra happy to have a friend at the show to hang out with.

A couple of the Mid-Ohio Cons I went to were at the Adams Mark, which I remember as being way too crowded.  At one of them I remember trying to get through a hallway that was jam packed when I saw you coming the other way.  I was getting ready to bum rush you when I saw your badge was turned to "off duty," so I clumsily switched to a head nod and a "Hey" which you returned.

I also remember more than once you delaying a panel so you could get to everyone in your signing line.  You were never anything but nice in all the appearances I saw you at as long as the fans met you part way.  Even when they didn't, I never saw you lose your cool.

One of the lines that struck me from John Mansfield's obit was "He did not suffer fools gladly, and he spoke bluntly."  I have to wonder if that's part of the reason you and he got on so well.
