I voted for Perot because I liked the idea of a third party. I still do. Now, I just think they have to start by growing from the grassroots level. Get city council spots, state-level legislators, Sheriffs even. At the time, I didn't realize how much power the big party infrastructures have. It's why we get the candidates we do. The candidates need a support mechanism and wide person-to-person networking to be effective or even show up on a ballot.

If you live in a state that is heavily favored towards one party or the other, I suppose it is perfectly acceptable to vote for a third party candidate and feel good about having done so. But in a swing state where it matters more towards the overall outcome? I don't know ...

This is my thought now. I have always voted for a top candidate, but now my state is so heavy red my vote won't count. Voting third party is a long game plan. Get the numbers up for a third party so they get attention and have an effect. It's a long term plan. For Senator and local stuff I'll vote some Dems and maybe a Rep (party hardly matters for county commissioner!), but I know who's winning the state...so why play that game?

In TN, and especially my county, I have no illusions that my votes will be worth anything but I’m still voting democrat against all the MAGA insanity.

Yeah... In my earlier statement about the senselessness of voting for a third-party Presidential candidate, I was thinking of people in swing states where a vote can actually make a difference. But I agree that if you're in a state where it's certain that the outcome will not be close, there's no harm in voting for a third party to make a statement.

++++++++++++++++++++ Ditto. As far as I know, everyone in this house who is voting is going Democrat, but I have plenty of relatives who are full-on MAGA.

one more time- Florida turned the 2000 election to Bush. A relatively small number of voters made the difference. Dems want to blame that on Nader voters. I want to put te blame where it shoud lie on Gore not being a good enough candidate that he let 300,00 REGISTERED democrats decide they should vote W instead of Gore.
beyond that I also think the Gore admin failed the test on allowing the election to be handed to W after the fact via courts. He should have fought harder then.

And again this is b.s.
The Bush voters wanted Bush and got him— no matter what they registered as.
WTF did the Florida Nader voters want? Their “protest” meant they could have contributed to keeping Dipshit George in Texas, but wanted to “send a message” instead.
But they wrote their message on a ticket sending W. to the White House.

Mark, why do you insist on giving the registered Dems (and their candidate) a free pass and shackling Nader voters with this false albatross? If you think it's OK that dems voted for Bush then why isn't it ok for Dems or Repubs or independents to vote for Nader or other third parties?
There's no evidence that Nader voters would have necesarily voted for Gore and he certainly wasn't OWED their vote. They might have stayed home, surely some (maybe many) of them would have.
Beyond all of this- Gore ran a sh*tty campaign that allowed one of the dumbest, least qualified candidiates of all time to beat him. That's what gave us W.
