Man, that Amazing Spider-Man run....... met Roger at a
small con in Scranton, back in 1991ish. I was trying to
sell off some of my comics, at the time. While I sold
nearly nothing, Roger, his wife and Archie Goodwin sat
beside me for the day and it was a very enjoyable
afternoon. Roger's wife bought my copy of the Boy Who
Collected Spider-Man, his favorite story. I had to buy a
replacement copy, a handful of years later.
Their kindness meant a lot to me and I have always looked
back fondly towards them.

Author of my favorite comic of all time. ASM 229. Spider-Man vs
Juggernaut. Acquired in a playground trade. I was able to find 231 relatively
soon after that but it was decades before I got 230 and was able read the
conclusion. Just perfect.

I’ve grumbled about how working with Chris Claremont was rarely a true collaboration. The opposite was true with Rog. After bonking heads for hours on end (long distance, on Marvel’s dime) we could each be sure what we’d worked out would be on the page. Refreshing!

I say this with the highest intentions of praise, but I see nothing flashy about Stern's work. No "Look at me! aren't I so clever?" moments. It's just GOOD. and unfortunately that's a hard sell for some reason.

I would not presume to declare any individual the best comicbook writer -- but if I had to consider candidates, Mr. Stern would be right at the top. It's not just his storytelling, not just his talent in crafting dialogue, not just his ability to step back and let the art do its job: it's all that, and then some -- but maybe most because he so obviously loves and respects the characters that he borrows and returns unharmed and even improved.

It was Roger who had the Wasp do an impersonation of the Vision by having her balloon become square with rounded corners. Brilliant exploitation of the medium. He’s also known for some of the best balloon placement in the biz!
