Did anyone follow the recently concluded Final Experiment?

Will Duffy, a Pastor who also works in the finance field, heard the argument from flat-earthers (Flerfs) that, based on the most popular flat earth model that has the north pole in the centre and Antarctica circling the disk , a 24-hour sun is impossible in Antarctica. He devised the Final Experiment and pledged to take one Flerf and one Glober (translation: normal person!) to Antarctica to see what happened. In the end he paid for two Flerfs and a third won a trip in a golden ticket competition. Photographer Dave McKeegan, a YouTuber who debunks flat earth and the moon-landing conspiracies amongst other things, was the Glober. Various others also went, on both sides, through crowd-funding or other means. Candace Owens' director, Mark Herman was one of them.

YouTuber SciMan Dan has made this summary of the whole enterprise: https://youtu.be/dEc86p1vgLM?si=YtwcUhyvL086Sywo  (Jump to 1' 50" if you want to skip Dan's ad for his sponsor)

The amount of cope coming from the Flerf side has been staggering. Even before they went to Antarctica, Flerfs who were on record as saying a 24-hour sun was impossible down there, started changing their story. Any strange noises you've heard were probably the goalposts being moved. As others have observed, you've got to lie to Flerf! Unfortunately, once the in-fighting has settled down, I think many will still cling to their delusion. People like Dave Weiss (Flat Earth Dave) who has a flat earth app that uses the globe model to work, are too deeply committed to their grift to give it up. Others, like YouTuber Flatzoid are simply too stupid!

I heard what seemed like a useful explanation for the rise of this kind of
phenomena. There was always that one guy in town who believed the
craziest thing. But he was isolated, and his ideas never went anywhere. But
with the invention of the World Wide Web, all the different Isolated guys
from 1000 towns all over the place are able to meet and become a
community. This is an unfortunate aspect of the Internet, and I do not see
any way it can be fixed.

Honestly, I clicked on the thread title expecting it to be something about the upcoming Trump administration.

There’s too much idiocy in Flat Earth speculations—a generous term!—to even begin a reasonable debate. Flat Earthers literally have no ground to stand on.

I guess my main questions are:  What is it about the idea of a round earth that offends them so much?  And for what reason is it that they think we've been "lied to" for centuries?  What is the ultimate goal of "claiming" the earth is round, if it's "not?"

Must everything in life be a GIANT conspiracy to these people?

Shaun — these are small people with small lives. By subscribing to various conspiracy “theories” (JFK, the Moon landing, Area 51, etc) they declare themselves to know THE TRUTH. They are smarter than everyone else.

This is the one conspiracy that puzzles me the most because I can't figure out who even benefits from perpetuating such a lie. What's the goddamn POINT??

That's a question I've never seen an answer to Vinny. I've seen some Flerfs claim that there are lands beyond the ice walls of Antarctica which we're not supposed to know about. I suppose if we're all fooled into believing the globe then we won't think about the possibility that those lands exist. *shrug* As JB says, it's not really possible to have a reasonable debate with them.

The woman who delivers my mail is a flat earther. After I learned that I severely reduced our conversation moments!

If it was just that crazy guy in the corner house, everybody would ignore
him. There are still guys in my neighborhood who will stop me to explain
that “Christmas trees are satanic” and that everyone here is going to Hell.

But if he becomes part of an “online community”, then it becomes a
“movement” and things that would peter out on their own gain traction and
snowball. It’s aggregated mental health disorder on the march.

Don't want those Antarctic ice walls to melt or they're all doomed.  ;-)
