I was reading a brief history of The Scourge of the underworld a couple of days ago, and it mentioned that the Basilisk was killed in the pages of the Fantastic Four and was wondering....

How did that work? Did you have to have Scourge appear in the book? Did you get to pick the villain killed? Thanks.

Following orders from Mark Gruenwald.

Mark created Scourge to kill off what he considered Marvel’s lame villains. Trying to make them better, or simply not using them anymore, he did not consider an option.

Thanks for the answer! I enjoyed Scourge at first, but it seemed to sort of wither on the vine.

At first it seemed intriguing, but yeah, the more it went on the more annoying it became. The whole premise may have been more interesting if they'd done it as a sort of Punisher 'What if? tale, where Frank was actually being successful in his crusade.

But I think JB's wonderful She Hulk issues demonstrated why you should never write off such lame villains. As there's always a take that can be fun, if you're imaginative enough to make the effort with them.

As Neal Adams said, there are no bad characters, only bad writers.

Great design on Scourge - creepy and original. Loved the mask and white costume.

Who designed Scourge? IIRC, you drew his entry in the OHOTMU, JB?
