My distinct memory of reading that issue was of a kind of dreadful hope that somehow seemed to drag on (in a good way) for hours - though I’m certain I likely burned through it n no more than 20 minutes. That’s some real heavy audience control.

I did not start reading AF until after this issue.  While there was no online to go to for guesses, did anybody here have a big guess as to whom it would be? It seemed to be anybody's guess until those last few pages where it started pointing in one very obvious direction.

And who just bought it and turned to the end because you had to know?  I did that around the same month with the New Teen Titans Annual 3 as I HAD to see what became of Terra.

Well, I can say that I actually thought the person in question would be the last one who would meet their demise.

I knew right from the start. I found Mac the least interesting character, but I felt his demise would lay the groundwork for the most interesting storyline.

I don't know if this has ever been asked here, but did you
have any thoughts at the time as to someone eventually
taking up the Guardian mantle?

With Phoenix and Elektra's memorable deaths in recent memory, there was definitely a sense of danger in the air! I was convinced Mac's death was for real which made the whole thing so effective (and dreadful).

Just peak involvement as a comic book reader.

There were no plans to have someone else become Guardian.

I picked up AF #12 on the release week at my first ever trip to a comic book shop.

When I got home I opened to the last page to see who didn't survive and could not believe "they" did that!

"Well, at least it wasn't Sasquatch"*

*happened later in AF #23

I don't know who did this, but I love it.
