This is why politics sucks. Her faith wasn't an issue when
he dated and married her, but it's an issue for his
Christian Nationalist base. He now has to appeal to the
lowest denominator and is willing to sacrifice her identity
for it if need be.

He obviously does not really care what her religion is. He is just saying what he thinks will appeal to the evangelicals whose future vote he craves.
