That 90’s-era optimism was fairly common in the West, no doubt as a feeling of having ‘won’* the Cold War.

I saw an interview with Jordan Klepper where he said a root cause of MAGA energy was that it’s a hobby for retirees. Which really put a lot of this shit the West is going through into perspective, if not offering any actual consolation.

*’won’ = the list of problems that 20th century leaders deferred as part of that goal being all the reasons why civilizations are in the process of imploding right now.

Well, the results are in.
1,400 councillors are now Reform.
This will have a major impact on local policies, especially in my local area
where every single person we interacted with lost their seat.
It is clear from comments that the constant attacks on Keir Starmer have
destroyed his credibility, regardless of whether he is doing a good or bad
job.
Personally, I think he has made some stupid mistakes, but on a lot of things,
particularly Iran, he has been brilliant.

However, we are now in that period where it is bleeding obvious he will have
to resign, but he will hold on for a few weeks before actually resigning.

I used to be pro Union, for the United Kingdom. (Maybe I grew up influenced by the concept of Star Trek Federations and all that.)

But Brexit and now this horrible turn of events has me far more open to the idea of Scotland breaking away now from the UK. I guess I do have the small silver lining consolation that Reform didn't make any headway in Scotland.

I think Starmer should just join us back to the EU as a two fingered goodbye
to Reform.
But I guess he couldn’t do that legally.
He could probably sign a mega trade deal though
