James, if you don't mind, can you tell me how you went about the selling?

Hi John, no problems.
During covid, I sold some higher value comics as i
noticed everyone was using their furlough money to buy
things and comics increased in value.
So things like McFarlane Spider-Man, Clone Wars 1,
Infinity gauntlet and a few others went then.

This left me with a collection of around 8,500 comics,
many had value, most did not.
I kept telling myself that I would have another key issue
sale, but I have just been too busy.

I saw an advert on Facebook by a guy who buys collections
wholesale and gave him a message.
I had catalogued about 5,000 of the comics and there were
still enough there for him to be interested.
We agreed a price, and he came and collected them
Saturday.

I didn't get anywhere near as much as I would have got if
I had picked out the most valuable ones, but if I did
that, I would have bene left with thousands of comics
that I would have had no chance of getting rid of. So I
took this option.

James,

thank you for so kindly answering my message!

Can I just take the opportunity of saying how much I enjoy your posts here on the forum. Seems as if we are often of one mind.

I decided to start selling my collection around 3 years ago, starting at 'A' and advertising individual issues on eBay (so a whole ton of Alpha Flight and Avengers to start with).

There are tax implications for selling over a certain amount (even if those items are from a personal collection), so I kept a running total and just stopped when I hit the limit, starting again with the next tax year.

So far I've sold around 5 long boxes, with around another 30 to go. It's a slow process but it does give the best return. I did sell some series as a job lot (Clandestine, Knights of Pendragon etc).

Recently, I've discovered an antique & collectors fair that takes place four times a year, just around the corner from where I live. There are a couple of pop culture and toy stalls there too, and I'm considering taking a few boxes of comics to see if I can sell them.

I've been buying omnibuses to replace the stuff I love the most, and I've pretty much got everything I want (around 60 omnis, including all the JB and Miller stuff along with Layton's Iron Man and all the Conan's and ASM's).

I'm 57 and plan to retire before I turn 60, using the time to sell off the rest of my collection of individual issues. We'll see how it goes!

I sold off most of mine when my life fell apart and boy do I regret that I parted with a lot of it

I sold 85% of mine to a local dealer about 8 years ago and paid off some student loans.  I have maybe 10 short boxes.  Most physical comics now are JB issues, other artist centric issues, unusual one offs (WW 195 Sekowsky/Wood for example, a thing of beauty, love finding stuff like this), and some sentimental issues.

I have not once regretted selling.  If anything, I regret not selling more.  I have most Byrne output in collected format which is far easier to access.  May have to sell the actual issues.  Will probably keep special issues like FF 236 and 252.

I still have more collected editions than I will ever go back to.  I'll probably start going through those soon.
