Joe Shuster’s birthday today. My life would certainly have been different without him!

I had something written but opted not to post because it was too rambling/philosophical for so early in the thread. Without a doubt, an unsung key architect of 20th century global culture.

Superman was my "gateway drug" into superhero comics. He's on my office wall for inspiration (a George Perez homage of Shuster's Superman # 1 cover). So I owe Mr Shuster, and Siegel, a huge thanks for years and years of joy.

When I was assigned to reboot Superman a Boston newspaper objected to a Canadian being put in charge of such a supremely AMERICAN character!

It fascinates me to imagine the world before Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster changed it.
It seems to me that the enthusiasm people eventually had for superheroes was going into other things before Jerry created Superman. We know there were fantasies about cowboys, knights, Robin Hood, etc.
Then, like clouds gathering before a storm, there were new things like science fiction stories and pulp characters and masked do-gooders on the radio and in the newspaper.
Then, an instant of discharge and the whole storm strikes a bolt of lightning in young Jerry's mind and a new course was set for so many of us. I wonder how Joe felt about it, seeing Superman's smile for the first time. I know they realized Superman was a bit of a new thing-- but I wonder how much they allowed themselves to dream about on that first day --as they forumulated Superman and imagined what might come if their new character succeeded.
I wonder if the excitment of inventing something so earth-changing is exponentially bigger than just getting a "good idea"? I'd wager it's a creeping feeling that comes with saying to yourself, "hey-- this might just work! This might actually be great!"
I love how much of what Joe captured in that first Action Comics story is what still works about Superman today.
Thank you, Joe and Jerry-- there's no way to measure the impact you had on my life.
