I'm in the midst of trying to harness the AI wave basically in order to keep myself employed for the latter chapter of my career before I can retire. I work in IT (a very ageist industry, though that's an open secret), and my current company is trying to push everyone to use AI more in order to become more effiicent, to the point that they are going to start monitoring employee usage of AI in order to get work done. I suspect that will just lead to folks using it just for the sake of generating AI Slop to bump up the numbers for the lines of code that they generate.
I will say that on the IT front, AI has been a very useful tool. I've never been a great coder, which is why I chose jobs that didn't lean heavily on that, though I can read code fairly well. But generating code completely on my own involved lots of back and forth Googling, espeically when getting syntax right and debugging. I guess I'm glad that I didn't waste all that time on becoming better at it because now that's mostly out the door. My wife already warned the kids that Computer Science degrees are not going to be worth what they were for us when we got them.
