Question: The “Big Beautiful Bill” hasn’t even hit us yet...but in 2027 it'll cut Medicaid etc. and give tax breaks to billionaires... am I remembering correctly?

Will the public think Dems are to blame for this in 2027?

I voted for Perot. Not because I thought he really had any chance of winning, but because he was the closest thing on the ballot to “none of the above.”

I was looking at Perot until his "if elected, I will have no gays in my cabinet" announcement.  Say "it was a different time," all you want but the early 90s were not even as backward as the 80s, and I wasn't gonna have it anymore.  I was over that nonsense.

Not like Clinton was so great with the ridiculous "Don't ask, don't tell."

I also voted for Perot, for much the same reason. But in my case, I was 18 in '92, so it was the first election that I ever voted in.

But, with that I learned the big issue with voting third-party - the '92 election split the vote such that Clinton won with a minority vote. I'm not getting into opinions of Clinton here, but regarless it bothered me on principle that we had a president that the majority of voters voted against.

Perot was a predominantly conservative billionaire. The American people obviously have no issues with supporting conservative, rich outsiders if that’s the only non-“insider” choice. They also overwhelmingly voted for a black guy with a Muslim name. And an orange narcissist. American people are starving for a genuine change. Democrats continue to fail to see this and just might benefit from following a “radical, progressive” agenda that in any other democracy in the world would be seen as “moderate.” Even the establishment left tilts right in the US. It’s incredibly frustrating.

The greatest president we’ve ever had served the will of the people and enacted radical change. He was the architect of Social Security, the 40 hour workweek, and multiple public services. FDR truly prioritized the needs of the people, and he did more for the people than any other the last century at least. If either political party actually prioritized the people, and aggressively worked to improve the lives of ordinary Americans, they’d die in power.

Can't you say the same thing about Bush in 2000 and Tr*mp in 2016 but for that pesky Electoral College?  But if you are referring to "against," wouldn't every vote not for a specific candidate be a vote against them?

Yes, that too! I almost brought up the Electoral College*, but I kept it brief. What I meant was, in the case of 1992, 57% of the public voted against Clinton and he still won.

*Actually 1992 is another good example of how the EC screws with the will of the people. Though Clinton won with less than half the popular vote, he had over double the EC votes than Bush did. And even though Perot got nearly 20% of the popular vote, he got absolutely 0 EC votes.

In the first election I was old enough to participate, I voted for Nader. Living in NY, I knew Gore would win my state and I was a big believer even then in the idea that we need more than two parties. Point of fact, the only time I've ever been a registered democrat in my life was in 2016 because I found Trump to be so horrific and felt pushed into the Democratic Party. But my entire adult life, I've otherwise been a registered Independent. The two party system is poison. Ironic, because living in Ontario, I wish provincially the Liberals would team up with the NDP to take down the Conservatives.

I've already read a number of articles that basically instruct Democrats to remind people that the BBB was championed by Trump and passed by a Republican controlled congress.  Essentially, Democrats had zero to do with all the harm it will cause everyday Americans and that most of its effects were calculated by Republicans to occur after the midterms ostensibly to buttress against negative reactions that could hurt them at the polls.  Whole hell of a lot of good that did them!

While the two-party system isn't what the framers intended, in a lot of ways we ended up here because it's the most logical application of true representative democracy, which is all about effective compromise for a common goal. And it made America the most stable and prosperous country for pretty much the whole of the 20th century, while most multi-party parliamentary governments whiplashed and collapsed with regularity - from the outside, most of those governments (from France to Israel to Brazil) seem like any given party's or coalition's primary use of power when they manage to actually secure it is to figure out how to shoot themselves in the foot as efficiently as possible.

Like everything else about this sometimes very fucked-up country of ours, our form of Government is laughably far from perfect but also seems to be the best one going. Where else could a Trump be so effectively stymied? Yes, it took way too long to do so, and millions of (old, white) people will go to their grave thinking of him as their now-crucified savior. And we've still got two more years of this stupid, racist, vainglorious, unpredictable President to deal with, but hopefully that will be enough time for this revived and realigned Democratic Party to gel and get back to effective government for the people.

I spent most of 2026 doing ground work with my local Democratic Committee. It's about as flighty and chaotic as you might imagine at most times, but at the end they somehow did the job anyway, because of the core adherence to the principles of democracy and humanism.

Like Michelle McNamara says, "Life is chaos. Be kind."  If you're stumbling around in the dark, you're way better off listening to the timid and querulous offer to work together to find a way through than the booming authoritative one who's absolutely certain that only he can save us.

Thanks for your reply, Matt. I've read a few of those articles as well. Hope ppl are smart enough to see which party passed that horrible bill.

Also curious to see how news organizations will react over the next few months? I've frowned upon mainstream media's coverage which helped put this administration in power and will remain suspect of what they do as we head towards the 2028 election.

This coming year will reveal who has the courage to keep us on track to normalcy and accountability. (I remain skeptical with this Democratic Party and their commitment to the American people.)
