The thing about Kirby's design for Thor was that, while "historically inaccurate", it nevertheless created a DISTINCTIVE look. Kirby's Thor did not look like a generic Hollywood "Viking", as does the Avengers movie version.

Robert - now I can't un-see that...

JB - what I liked about Kirby's Thor was that, without needing said historical accuracy, it still managed to convey to readers 'Norse' and 'God'* - as well as the all-important superhero element. Of course, this being a modern superhero movie, we can't have the heroes looking like those silly comicbook superheroes, though, can we?

*It's a bit like what you've said on many an occasion about Stan Lee's gift with superhero names - it's not so much about actually resembling something (Cyclops doesn't have 'one eye' exactly, and Medusa's flowing locks clearly aren't snakes!) as it is instantly getting the message across through a kind of shorthand.
