Jim Campbell,
I think that what you may want to try is not inking your blacks or your hatching until you have grasped the rhythm and thicknesses to the line on your layout. This way, you won't be trying to "fix" your picture as you go, instead you can just concentrate on where the light source is and put your solid blacks in. Remember, hatching is just the icing on the cake in a picture, it really doesn't add to the detail. Many times it hides your layout and muddys up the energy that's already there.
I traced your picture and just added some flow and weight as I came towards the foreground. I think that you can see that if the picture can stand up in this  way that it is much easier and clearer to put in the rest of what is needed.

Hope this helps you clear up your inking problems.
Take care!

Just because some guys are super fast, it doesn't mean you can't be slow. By the way, I'm slow too.

It's great to see Green Lantern and Silver Surfer facing Galactus.

It's ok to be slow. My only desire to be faster is when it comes to producing art for work related stuff.

Anthony- That is incredible!

Take it from someone who is artistically challenged I would love to be slow and able to draw then not having the talent to do so.
