James -

can you see it now? I converted it into an RGB jpg, instead of the CMYK
jpg that it saves as automatically, because that seems to be a problem
sometimes.

Didier -

you can do the "duo-tone" any number of ways, but this is how I do it:
= go into a drawing program (I use Freehand) and make a bunch of
regularly spaced lines at a 45 degree angle; mine are 1 point wide and
every 4 points; and make sure that they will fill the space: if you have to
enlarge or reduce these lines they can lead to weird Moire-type patterns;
= import into Photoshop; I copy and paste from one program to the
other;
= add a Layer Mask using the options at the bottom of the Layers menu;
= make sure your paintbucket is filled with black, and use the
paintbucket to fill the Layer Mask for this Hatch layer; all of your lines
should now immediately disappear, but don't panic.
= (if nothing happens, or only one of the lines disappears, that means
you are still in the Layer with the lines and not the Layer Mask; undo, and
choose the Layer Mask);
= with the Mask chosen, use the eraser tool to make the lines appear
wherever you want the shading. Ta-da!

= to make cross-hatching (lines going the other way): duplicate the layer
of the first set of lines (the "Hatch" Layer);
= go to the Edit pull-down menu, chose Transform >Flip Horizontal;
= now you have "Cross-Hatching"

I use the Hatching to make a general shadow, and the Cross-Hatching to
make a darker shadow, like in the darker areas of the back leg in the
drawing of Cheetera.

I have also used this technique to do dot patterns and other repeating
patterns. And i'm still experimenting for bigger things, at this point.
