I missed the original in 1976 when it came out. However, there was a  paperback book for the second team up: "Superman and Spider-Man" ("Marvel and DC Comics present the greatest superheroes team-up of all time." - First Printing: June 1981.) It's still in my home office with the other paperback comics reprintings.

Regarding the solicitation I noted above, I think there will be another Spider-Man / Superman solicitation with the February 2026 Westfield Comics order.

Was the original release in a large treasury style format?
That's what I had. I read it until it fell apart.

Yes, the original was tabloid sized.

As was the $&@€ WIZARD OF OZ adaptation, that maybe three people cared about, but that stripped SUPERMAN/SPIDER-MAN of any claim to being the first marvel/DC crossover.

:-ppppppppppppppp

The WIZARD OF OZ adaptation definitely came out first, though I think of it more as a collaboration and not a true crossover since it was just the two companies working on a public domain property that neither one owned and there was no intermixing of characters that don't normally appear together.  The Wizard of Oz is my favorite movie, so I'd be one of the three people that cared about it but I'd still like for SUPERMAN/SPIDER-MAN to have come out first.

That I have not been able to find the magic in WIZARD probably contributes to my resentment.

Later crossovers began to suffer from too much fan-think. When I turned in my plot for DARKSEID vs GALACTUS Mark Gruenwald complained that there was “too much background stuff the readers already know.”

I reminded him that the first one gave us several pages of “hero identification”—for Superman and Spider-Man, two of the most famous fictional characters of all time!

Background information makes sense to me.  Every comic is somebody's first plus some readers may be familiar with Marvel OR DC characters but not necessarily those of the other one.  Seems like a good idea to provide enough information for anyone reading to be able to understand the characters and what is going on, same as in pretty much any Byrne product!

“Every issue is the first issue for somebody.” So sayeth Mort Weisinger, and it is as true now as it was when he was an editor at DC.

Unfortunately, “writing for the trade” has driven this vital concept from the minds of too many writers and editors, who produce literal “chapters” instead of enticing introductions to the characters.

I see Amazon is listing the creators on this as Ross Conway and Gerry Andru.
