Google is a utility at this point. While I recognize their prevailing reason for immediately acting on these Orange Whims is a (quite rational) fear of the legal and economic shitstorm that could rain down on them, it would also be a major upheaval cutting across vast swaths of global infrastructure. I’m certain they’re aware of that just as I’m certain they also know that the Trump administration would take those actions without any consideration for the wider consequences.

In other words, they’re definitely quisling-esque cowards of the first order, and for the same very understandable reasons.

If it makes you feel any better, in Canada, Google Maps still has it labeled Lake Ontario, and I presume that's true internationally as well.

Apple Maps internationally shows only the original
Google maps international are wimps and have the orange git’s demand in
brackets. Just as they do with the Gulf.

America is ruled by a dictator. He says jump, and your companies say ‘How
high’
There’s two words that can be applied to that situation fascist or
communist.
America will never pick the latter, so the former applies here.

I’ve lived in Kansas my entire life, and even in this blood-red state I am frequently surprised by the imbecility that seems to be there to mask the cruelty.
We’ve all heard about ICE; my son-in-law is 4th generation Mexican-American, but to look at him there no question he’s Hispanic. He’s taken to carrying a copy of his birth certificate and marriage license with him ‘just in case.’
And we ask why people don’t come here.

I tried MapQuest this morning as their social media account on Threads announced it wasn't renaming Lake Ontario. Ads and paywalls. Navigation was fine.

I moved to Mapquest today. Americans don't understand how destroyed the relationship with Canadians is now. It doesn't matter whatever trade deal gets "signed". We aren't going to come back for tourism like we did, we aren't going to buy your products and we are going to cheer when the orange king is eventually forced to leave but then rage when he is replaced by someone to cowardly too try and repair things.

Short of Trump in jail, ICE abolished and free trade restored, Canadians are voting with their dollars to do business elsewhere, whether Carney wants us to or not.

Here in Ontario, there is much clutching of pearls as various Canadian companies and even government entities are getting publicly flogged because their websites show Lake America.  Examples include the Province of Ontario liquor store website, and Metrolinx which runs commuter trains and buses in and out of Toronto.   Of course it just means their website maps are based on Google maps.   Each shamed entity has had to issue a statemnen that they are fixing the issue as quickly as possible.

I echo Robin's comments above.  The US could elect a Democrat in 2028, who might apologize and go on a world tour to try to mend fences.  It would not change the raw emotions an ever growing number of Canadians have that half the people who decided to vote in 2026 looked at Trump's first term and said Yeah I want 4 more years of that.

What's the attitude of Canadians directed towards Americans visiting Canada?

Two decades ago, when America was flexing their aggression towards Iraq, my wife and I were on a subway line in Toronto and I noticed a woman was reading a news article about W.'s antagonistic behaviour. She saw me looking, so I just said "Huh, Americans."

Not knowing I was one, she said "Yah, they should stick to their own side of the border, eh?" (If you read that in a Cannuck accent, you got exactly how she sounded.) It was very difficult for me to hide my laughter since she didn't know she was talking to an American.

But to answer your question more directly, Bryan, I don't think there is a "national sentiment" about this whole thing, beyond general concern about how out of control things appear to be in the US. I'm sure there are a good number of Canadians who wish Americans would stick to their side of the border. There are a loud minority of Canadians who look to American Nationalism as a model to follow, who call themselves Maple MAGA. And more still know that not everybody in the US is happy about what's happening, and feel commiseration.

I know that what I'm about to say sounds crazy, and I don't believe this strongly enough to be taking proactive measures (beyond occasionally gently reminding my wife to apply for her Irish citizenship, in case she and my son ever need somewhere to go), but I'm waiting for Trump to start talking about annexing the southernmost part of Ontario, basically from Hamilton to Sarnia, because it would connect New York to Michigan and give the US control over Niagara Falls, which is a huge electricity producer. I don't think it's going to happen. I bet you someone in that insane, criminal administration has discussed it.
