Since the earliest days of my career I have been vexed by colorists—fan and pro alike—who treat my “open” figures as it I have somehow forgotten to fill in the dark areas. They take what I intend as a brightly illuminated form—usually figure—and lay on flat, solid colors. (There was a DEMON cover that particularly annoyed me. I had Batman engulfed in Etrigan’s hellfire, so I drew him with no shadows. The colorist laid in the standard blue and grey, and the effect was lost.)
