Looking at the Thor and Wolverine models on the linked page above, it strikes me as funny that it always seems that the default imagery for such endeavors always seems to fall back on the more classic, original costumes. Even when, like Wolverine, they haven't worn that particular look for nigh on 20 years. It almost makes one wonder why these companies keep trying to re-invent the wheel, as their marketing and fans always seem to go back to those earlier designs.

Just looked at my X-MEN omnibus, and realized what the problem was: there was, of course, that "fill in" (actually an inventory job) by Bob Brown, which came out in the middle of the Shi'ar story and shunted everything out of place. And given that the X-MEN was bi-monthly, that mean not one month off, but two or more.

Thus, the IRON FIST issue came out before the X-MEN issue.

(A special frustration for me was that Dave being unable to keep up with a monthly schedule meant Marvel commissioned a fill-in that had to be used after Dave departed from the title -- which is why what should have been my third issue was penciled by Tony DeZuniga, and I was forever denied any chance of an unbroken run on the book!)

I pulled out the Omnibus yesterday to look up the letter column for the Bob Brown dedication referenced upthread.  It's amazing how fast I can fall into this series of issues.  Those stories mean so much to me - they were a life raft when I was a kid, and they still really hold up.

I know you have had to field tons of X-Men questions over the years, JB - I hope it's not too much of a drag, because I find the backstage stories of how the book was done to be endlessly interesting.

I have often wondered if the seeds of the myth of my out of control ego were born from fielding those many questions about X-MEN. As time went by on the book, and I assumed more and more of the plotting duties, fans who did not understand the "Marvel Method" (plot/pencils/script) would often tell me at cons and other public appearances how much they loved something Chris had done, and I would point out that it was actually mine.

Easy enough to imagine people wandering off to report how I was trying to take credit for everything!

Re-reading those issues of X-Men is like listening to early Beatles songs. It is not so easy to tell how much of an early song was Lennon or McCartney versus "Lennon-McCartney". The later ones were easy.
