OK- here the deal. This was received yesterday, I did a six
page story for Digital Webbing and tend to get proposals on a
consistant basis. As you guys know I can't do them all, for one
thing they don't pay. Now, with this i was guaranteed a slot in
an upcoming issue. So, i am putting it up to see who can lay it
out.
If your interested, go ahead and try it. you will be credited and
for the most part have something for the portfolio.
Here it is:
Characters
Night Star/Michael Whitman: He's a young movie star.
Remember the early run of Superboy by Tom Grummett?
Superboy with a leather jacket? Concerned with image? Well,
NS is like that. I can send you an image of SB if you need it. I'm
thinking close-cropped hair, like George Clooney, only blonde.
Good-looking. Boyishly handsome, like Ryan Phillippe, not
Brad Pitt. Outfit should be a jacket over tights, like S-boy, but
there should be product placement on it (fake products, of
course). Maybe on the sleeves. He should have a stylized "N"
on his outfit (chest-area would probably be best). I'm not sure
on colors, but blue and gold have never done a star wrong.
Maybe some black thrown in (for the “Night” part). He's a glory
hound. Press junkie. He wants people to notice him, take
pictures, talk and write about him, etc. He should wear
sunglasses (product placement), gloves, maybe a utility belt of
some kind, but it should all be for looks, not convenience. He
has style. His weaponry: throwing stars he infuses with energy,
so maybe he has pouches on his outfit to hold them, along with
holding them in the belt. I can give a link to throwing stars too, if
you need it. That's all I can think of, Anthony.
Bank Robbers: Just guys with masks wearing t-shirts and
jeans, I suppose.
Jennifer Rodriguez: A beautiful young woman. I think long, dark
hair would be best. Exotic look.
Jeremy: Think one of the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy types.
He’s fashionable, but thin and wispy. Maybe a neatly trimmed
goatee or thin mustache.
Page One
Panel 1 – Star City stands proudly in the midday sun. This is a
city of movie stars and celebrities. A warm weather mix of
coastal cities Los Angeles and New York.
CAPTION: Star City. I call this peaceful, golden metropolis my
home. I love this town.
Panel 2 – In front of a movie theater, reporters and paparazzi
surround Michael Whitman and a stunningly beautiful woman
on his arm. They’re both standing on a red carpet, submitting to
a horde of picture-taking animals. In the background, a large
poster features Michael and the woman on his arm. They’re
back to back, holding guns. The title of the poster is “Spy
Spouses”.
CAPTION: And if you can’t figure out why, just take a look at
me. I’m rich, famous, good-looking, and my face is on the
poster for the biggest movie in the country!
PAPARAZZI: Michael! Give us a smile!
PAPARAZZI: Just one more, Mike!
Page Two
Panel 1 – Zoom in on Michael as he smiles brilliantly for the
cameras. It is a phony smile, but you can barely tell. This is a
good-looking, confident guy who is at home posturing for the
masses.
CAPTION: Talk about a charmed existence, right? Women want
me, men want to be me, and as if that wasn’t good enough…
Panel 2 – Everyone looks away from Michael and his beautiful
co-star as an explosion occurs off-panel.
SFX (off-panel): KA-KROOM!
Panel 3 – Michael is ripping his tuxedo to shreds with one
hand, and making a phone gesture with his free hand while
glancing at his co-star. The outfit of Night Star is beneath the
tux.
MICHAEL WHITMAN: Duty calls, ladies and gentleman.
Jennifer, call me.
Panel 4 – A thin man in another tuxedo tosses Night Star a
leather jacket as he runs forward. He catches the jacket in one
hand, while placing sunglasses on his face with the other. The
paparazzi part around him like the Red Sea before Noah.
CAPTION: That’s right. I’m a superhero!
NIGHT STAR: Thanks, Jeremy!
Panel 5 – Night Star has taken flight, leaving the shutterbugs
and celebrities below looking after him in awe. The wispy man
who threw him the tux is calling up through cupped hands.
MARTY: Give ‘em hell, Michael! And don’t scuff the jacket!
CAPTION: Could life get any sweeter? I really kind of doubt it. I
even have my own personal wardrobe guy!
Page Three
Panel 1 – A couple of masked men are dashing out of a bank
with guns and bags of money. Smoke is pouring out of the
windows of the bank from the explosion.
CAPTION: Of course, not everyone has it as good as me. I
understand that. But I believe in leading by example.
THUG 1: I thought I told you to wait in the car! The whole point
of a speedy getaway is you need a getaway driver!
Panel 2 – The thugs are running toward a car parked across
the street. A few people are injured on the ground, but nowhere
near the car. A glowing throwing star is zipping past the
robbers to strike the car they’re going for. They’re too busy
arguing to notice it.
CAPTION: In this business, you’ve got to put your best foot
forward, while trying as hard as you can to keep it out of your
mouth.
THUG 2: Oh, relax. The cops aren’t even here yet. The
explosion will throw them off, and two sets of hands are better
than one. This way we both get a bigger cut.
THUG 1: That is the stupidest reasoning I’ve ever…
Panel 3 – The explosive energy from the throwing star causes
the car to explode, throwing the bank robbers backwards.
CAPTION: You’ve got to live by the principles "Do onto others,"
"What goes around comes around," and my personal favorite
"Karma's a mother-"
SFX: FA-KOOM!
Panel 4 – Both bank robbers have landed on the ground. Night
Star is standing over them. Both bank robbers are looking
confusedly over their shoulders at him.
NIGHT STAR: I don’t think the speedy getaway is going to work
this time, guys.
THUG 2: What the…?
THUG 1: Man, I told you.
Panel 5 – Both bank robbers have gotten to their feet and are
firing at Night Star.
CAPTION: But even so, when I first got these powers people
doubted my good intentions. Being a movie star isn't the most
honorable profession, unfortunately.
THUG 2: I know you’re not blaming me for this.
THUG 1: Who else am I going to blame?
Page Four
Panel 1 – The bullets are melting and dissolving before they
reach Night Star.
CAPTION: I was the hottest thing around. Why would I risk my
skin for the little guy?
Panel 2 – The first bank robber is glaring at the second one.
The second one can’t believe his eyes.
CAPTION: I made nearly five mil a picture fer cryin' out loud! I
was no Tom Cruise, but I held my own.
THUG 2: Aw, crap.
Panel 3 – Night Star is holding out three throwing stars that are
glowing with energy.
NIGHT STAR: I suggest you guys give it up…
CAPTION: But as my agent told me--right before I fired him, that
is--
Panel 4 – Night Star throws the energized throwing stars at the
feet of the bank robbers. They’re giving off miniature
explosions, and the bank robbers are hopping and dancing to
avoid the explosions.
CAPTION: Kid, you're gonna blow up!
SFX (from miniature explosions): POOM! POOM! POOM!
Panel 5 – Night Star is showing the bank robbers another
throwing star. The throwing star is glowing menacingly.
CAPTION: My agent suggested, in his infinite wisdom, that I use
my powers to enhance my image beyond the confines of my
acting ability.
NIGHT STAR: Before I blow up something more vital to you
than your ride.
Page Five
Panel 1 – The bank robbers have thrown down their weapons.
CAPTION: Now, normally I'd scoff at any advice from a snake.
Panel 2 – Night Star has turned to look over his shoulder at a
crowd that has formed in front of the smoldering bank behind
him.
CAPTION: Heck, look what happened to Adam & Eve.
NIGHT STAR: Good boys. Now… huh?
Panel 3 – The crowd that has formed is cheering and clapping
for Night Star. More paprazzi have arrived, and are snapping
pictures rapid fire.
CAPTION: But I'd be lying if I said he wasn't absolutely right.
Panel 4 – Night Star is moderately embarrassed by the
attention he’s receiving.
CAPTION: I’ve never been bigger! And as a celebrity, there's
nothing I covet more than attention.
Panel 5 – One of the crooks has the bag of money lifted high
over his head and is rushing Night Star from behind.
CAPTION: I can’t even get a free minute for myself. Not that I’d
want one.
THUG 2: Yaaahhh!
Page Six
Panel 1 – The crook swings the bag for Night Star’s head.
CAPTION: It's almost enough to go to a guy's head.
Panel 2 – Night Star catches the bag in his hand casually.
CAPTION: But I deal the best I can.
SFX: Fwap!
Panel 3 – The crook is trying to pull the bag free of Night Star’s
grip. He’s really straining, but Night Star isn’t giving an inch.
CAPTION: And the best thing about all of this...
THUG 2: Unngh! Argh! C’mon! Let me have it!
NIGHT STAR: Well, since you asked so nicely.
Panel 4 – Night Star punches the crook, lifting him off his feet.
CAPTION: The thing that makes it more worthwhile than
anything else I've ever done...
Panel 5 – The other crook is ducking as the first crook goes
sailing over his head.
THUG 1: Whoa!
Panel 6 – The conscious crook and Night Star are both looking
down at the unconscious crook. Night Star is cracking his
knuckles, and the conscious crook is shaking his head in
shame.
CAPTION: Is this is just the beginning.
NIGHT STAR: You really need a new partner.
THUG 1: Tell me about it.

Question...do we have to precisely follow the layout as given? For instance, there are 2 panels on page one but I have a layout idea that would include at least 3 or 4 panels but achieve the same scene. I tend to want to move and zoom the "camera" for more visual effect.

This work is a personal direction, I created this painting as part
of an ongoing series of works that gets inspiration from
puppets, old circus elements of early 1900s, Jack n the Boxes
and other elements. Right now it is part of a group show in a
Los Feliz gallery/ store called Rosemary’s Billygoat Odditorium.
I have done some illustration before for various clients.

A little fun with pencil - a redo of something I did at 17 which was a swipe of somebody swiping someone else - basically I had to redraw the whole thing. It's a poster rough for a film of mine and the designer wants a "coloring book finish" with all the lines connected.
Oh and a Jay Garrick bolt and goggles. Id forgotten the joy of commercial illustration.
