I have a question for all you great artists! When you draw these characters do you use references or just imagination!? See I'm good at copying but terrible at drawing from scratch!

Congrats everyone, a hundred pages of terrific art, what a load of talent.
Also thanks to JB for allowing us to post in his playground.

Chris, I'll say "Yes". To both-LOL. I'll generally sketch something out of my head to give me something to play around with. I'll maybe move limbs and things around on the sketch (Giving the effect of a three armed four legged person-LOL) until I'm happy but then I'll reference things like Guns, leather, certain lighting effects, hands if I feel I need to.

That all depends on how "real" I want the piece to look. I'm very confident about drawing the human anatomy but I also appreciate that there are textures that can really add realisim to a piece.

Depends on what you want the piece to do at the end of the day I guess.

I don't think you can -really- ignore referencing. What if the script says Brand new Mercedes SLK?

Or Looks like Chandler from Friends?

You need sometimes to remind yourself or source.
