Charles - funny you should ask. I was originally trained as a
master draftsman before AutoCAD took over (although I made the change to CAD as well). I worked with velum
and rapidograph pens. I've got about 1 million of those things!
I think they're great for cleaning up a stray line or some detail
work, but I feel they take away the "organic" feel of the line (or
erasing in this case) a little too much.
I lay out my pencils real light first, with a 3 or 4H drafting pencil,
then I start to slowly build up my shading in layers. As I'm
going along, I'll pull some highlights with the eraser, but It's
important to have a tight layout and stick to it. The hardest
thing for me is to remember to work the image as a whole and not just
obsess in one area for too long. Then it just looks like a lot of
really well rendered parts that don't work as a whole.

Marc yeah I like this one better.
Matthew I'm really looking forward to seeing what ya did. But i tell ya when i finish my two page spread i'm doing it's gona be real tempting for you. Especially if you happen to be a fan of the original Star Trek

Mathew, I figured you had probably heard of those before. That is an interesting point about losing the organic feel. Thanks for the desciption of your process. It would be neat to see people show their works in stages to see the different processes they use.

Hey, Thanks Matthew, to be honest I quite like how the shoulders look
because I do feel that she should appear quite bulky, but that's just
me. :) Also, the photos always distort my drawings a little so they
never look as good.

Chris - that's cool. I respect your decision. Sometimes as
an artist you just want something a certain way. I do like it,
though.

Michael - Very nice work, the one of your daughter is absolutely adorable.
Chris - While the drawing is nice, the pose is a bit stiff for a superhero,
loosen her up a bit ;)
Marc - You have her eye too close to the bridge of her nose. The eye
should be set further on the head.
