It’s interesting to see how many people seem to remember his version of
Valiant fondly.
I genuinely thought that line was going to make it, but alas, business got in
the way and it all fell apart, just after what I consider one of the best and
most innovative cross overs we got.
While I hated SECRET WARS with a passion, I loved UNITY with an equally
opposite passion.

Though I did not know him, his impact on things that I love and his reputation make it emotional to hear he has died.

By the time I'd become a reader, Shooter's term as EIC was in full swing and it's an era that still remains the standard against which I measure the entertainment and craft of mainstream comics - and even many art or independent comics. I recognize that his shifting rules and other aspects of his tenure sometimes made creative work difficult but I also have to look at the results - a line-wide high watermark for Marvel that I think objectively hasn't been hit since.

It's also the era where he wasn't writing monthly titles, so I missed much of that but genuinely enjoyed his writing, particularly on the maligned Secret Wars II and Star Brand.

As EiC, Shooter had no peer during that period. Marvel was great.Shooter's impact on the industry during his time huge.

As a writer, he was so-so. Yes, his first run on the AVENGERS was a must read, but his second stint.... it gave us the infamous slap. Something that has stained one of my favorite characters for well over 40 years.

I never forgave him for that.

RIP.

However his ego and stubborn ways took the ship off course later, for me
the early-middle part of his EIC-dom was a positive, steadying force that
righted a then-also listing ship and ushered in an era of greatness only
surpassed by Stan Lee’s wunderkind creation and stewardship of Marvel in
the 1960s. He had good ideas and had the balls to implement difficult but
correct calls early and often. Later things went off the rails and (it seems)
absolute power did what it usually does. I don’t love everything he did but I
thank him for playing a part in making my late 1970s- mid 1980s Marvel
reading experience the best it ever was outside of those glorious Stan Lee
years. RIP.
