I thought that Superman was vulnerable to magic, but not especially
vulnerable, so Mjolnir would hit him as hard as it hit anything, and he would
receive the hit as well as he received any blow from a heavy, powerful blunt
object. Do I misunderstand?

The wrinkle is, would Mjolnir hit him like it would hit any
normal human, due to being magical in origin. If
so...messy. The trick, as has already been noted, would be
actually being able to hit him in the first place.

But doesn't that same rule apply to the Hulk as well? He doesn't immediately get knocked out from a hit from Mjolnir, either.

But he should.

I think Superman has the speed and strength advantage. Plus heat vision.

But Thor has the hammer and experience, as well as being supernatural.

My question is would Superman be quick enough to avoid any lightning Thor summoned? I could be wrong, but I'd assume if Thor threw the hammer, Superman would be able to dodge it.

I wish people would forget that “worthy” business. It worked when Don Blake was a regular guy who gained the power of Thor thru the hammer, but from the moment Stan and Jack pulled their ginormous retcon, it should have been played as a ruse by Odin to keep the artificial Blake from too soon figuring out what was going on.

The Donald Blake concept has gotten weird in that they made him a separate entity again who has memories from the fake one I think. It's confusing.

"Supes was also worthy enough to lift the hammer in the Busiek and Perez's JLAvengers crossover series, if I remember that correctly."
------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------------

There was a caveat to that though. As Superman tries to lift it again at the end, and can't. (Much to the amusment of Carol Danvers in the background IIRC.) Where upon Thor himself explains that Odin only allows a worthy person other than Thor to lift it when there's a specific crisis situation that requires it. And the moment Superman was able to use Mjolnir was when Thor was stuck and possibly getting overwhelmed, by a whole host of villains, and so Thor himself threw it to Superman to catch, to help Superman breach the barrier to confront the main foe of the series.

So in other words, there's no possible scenario where Superman could pick up Mjolnir and actually start using it against Thor.

Because Superman is vulnerable to magic, it leads people to think he is somehow MORE vulnerable to magic than anyone else - which has never been the case.

Thor's hammer would only hit him with the same amount of force that it hits the Hulk, Thanos, Juggernaut, Hercules, or whoever.

Can Thor beats Superman?  No.  One quick trip into outer space to the sun would end it pretty quickly. Superman could survive that, Thor could not.

Thor hitting Superman with his hammer would be like one strong guy hitting another strong guy with a sledgehammer.

JB: Thor hitting Superman with his hammer would be like one strong guy hitting another strong guy with a sledgehammer.

***

Agree completely. If Thor gets a good solid hit on Superman, it's probably over.

But how does Thor fare against Superman's heat vision? Seems like that might even the odds in the "ranged attack" department.

As far as it goes, JB has noted before that Superman is not *uniquely* vulnerable to magic; everyone is.

Mjolnir is an enchanted weapon. We don't know if its magic allows it to inflict MORE hurt than a similarly sized metal hammer thrown with superhuman strength would inflict--probably?--but its ability to summon lightning by itself is a pretty good ability.

1970s Superman would mop up the floor with Thor.

Current Superman, I might have to give the advantage to Thor.

But as mentioned, these sorts of fights are usually determined by what how the story needs them to turn out.
