Questions like this invariably fall into the “my dad can beat your dad” department. So many times I have seen fans declare impossible victories for characters who happen to be their favorites. Batman can beat Galactus!!!I prefer some kind of internal logic. Not “realism” as such, but at least the suggestion that events are unfolding as they “really would”.

Here's a good example.
1960's Spider-Man has problems with characters like the Kingpin, Ox and Man Mountain Marko.
Twenty years later he's able to take down Firelord. Which I'm not buying. Firelord has gone toe-to-toe with Thor, Hercules and Phoenix. Spider-Man should be mostly street-level threats, he shouldn't be going against heralds of Galactus.

Roger Stern used to complain mightily about the Kingpin. “A fat guy who beats up Spider-Man!”

Superman may be able to dodge Thor's hammer *at first*, but even Superman would eventually tire out. I don't know what the limits of Mjolnir are, but I'm guessing the hammer would find Superman eventually. Unless Superman finds Thor first and zaps him between the eyes with his heat vision.

Why would Superman be fighting Thor?
I prefer a mistaken conflict, one where the combatants realize there has been a error in judgement about the each other's motivation and intent and stop fighting before it gets serious.

Re: the 'Spider-Man shouldn't beat Firelord' thing...Stern basically wrote Firelord for laughs in that story(Firelord crossed however many millions of miles to come to Earth because he had a craving for...pizza).The long trip served to (eventually) 'depower' him, as he expended too much energy on the fight with Spidey. This weakened him enough for one of those classic 'Spider-Man beats the odds and defeats a more powerful enemy' finishes. But the setup was far more cheesy than any pizza Firelord may have consumed.

Stern didn’t write the Spider-Man/Firelord story. Tom DeFalco did.
And he only defeated him because he trapped Firelord in an exploding oil refinery. That weakened him enough to allow Spider-Man to finish him off.

Stern DID write my favorite comic book ever, ASM 229 which had Spider- Man against Juggernaut.

As a kid-reader I assumed that the Kingpin must have been a mutant to be able to best Spider-Man.

Why would Superman be fighting Thor?••• Maybe it’s the Superman who tore off Green Arrow’s arm?

I remember reading that issue of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and thinking: As a herald of Galactus, how can being that can survive indefinitely in space and has flown around the rim of stars (if not into them) be harmed/weakened by a mere gas/oil explosion!?!?!?!?!?
