When I was a kid we used to pronounce my surname Mo-bert. At some point my dad started using the French pronunciation Moo-bear which I've also used for many years (Pretentious? Moi?). When we worked together in the civil service, one of the girls in Personnel told me that they used to call us "Daddy Moubert" and "Baby Moubert"!

At the risk of major thread drift ("I knew a guy"), I knew
a teacher that was as anglo as anglo could be that had the
surname "Lambert" that insisted on pronouncing it "Lam-
bear".

So where do all these oddball pronunciations come from? Are they
bastardized from Welsh or Celtic or something?

I always chuckle when I hear people on TV referring to that bluey-green planet as OO-RAN-US, desperately trying to avoid the YER-ANUS trap...

One of my gal pals really enjoys big, fat history books, so I loaned her a couple on Tudor/Elizabethan England, one of my favorite periods. When she started telling me how much she enjoyed them I elected to bite my tongue when she pronounced various names as spelled.
