Is it contagious?

Well, those double Ls do require an almost cough…

Coincidentally, this popped up on my Facebook feed.

Hmm, it worked for me - maybe try as a direct LINK instead?

Thanks, Vinny.

Interesting to see my birthplace, Walsall, on the list—and NOT pronounced as I was taught. They say “Warsaw”, but my parents said “Warsull”.

It’s Warsull.
You were taught correctly.

That’s interesting, I’ve never heard it pronounced anything other than Woll-
Sorl.

To add to the problem, I am very visually oriented (d’uh!) which means once I have SEEN a word/name it can be very difficult for me to apply a pronunciation other than what I’ve seen. This is especially vexing in the case of Walsall, since I heard the name before I saw it, but once I did see it my tongue started tripping over it.

Truth be told, there are a lot of micro dialects in this small area.
I would say the following are ways I have heard it pronounced
War-sull
Warl-sull
Woll-sorl

The one I’ve never heard is war-saw which is the version the article claims.

I would say, though, that the rest of that article is pretty spot on.

Yes it's mostly War-sull, but i have heard radio/tv
presenters say Warl-sull.

Interesting to see the Welsh village with the long name and
it reminded me of Llangollen where the first LL is
pronounced "CL" but the second "LL" is pronounced "THL"

So it's "Clangothlen" with a sort of cough/Klingon emphasis
on the "CL"

For some "strange" reason, this thread reminds me of The Bookshop Sketch with John Cleese & Marty Feldman...

Enjoy!
