I recently recorded a podcast called We Got This with Mark & Hal. The show is always a lively debate of superlatives, such as The Best Superpower, The Best Appetizer or The Best 80's Music Video. For this episode, the guest is me and the topic is

Best Fantastic Four Member

Come listen to Hal, Mark, their producer (and Byrne Robotics member) Ken Plume and myself as we discuss and debate.

Ken, Hal and I are FF devotees and Mark has certainly done his research!

Be sure to listen till the end and see if you agree with our assessments.

Will have a listen, Scott.

(Reed is the best member of the FF).

Sue was the most fun to write. Ben the most fun to draw. Reed the most intellectually challenging. And Johnny was just sorta… there.

(I have noted before that one cannot write someone smarter than oneself, which is a standard challenge with Reed. Of course, the trick there is that I can spend days doing the necessary research for something he comes up with in seconds!)

Reed went through all your sources years earlier and memorized every last detail.

Deep love for Ben here.

Another vote for the Thing here.  I love both the humor and pathos of the character.  I’ve also long had a love for brutes like he and the Hulk.

Hands down the Thing.
I used to judge the FF artists that would recognize that Ben had his own unique physically in terms of posture, weight distribution, agility, etc.
I don't care for the depictions where he simply is a big guy covered in orange rocks with a few less digits.

I liked how JB really made Sue such an interesting and strong character during his run, such as when she faced off against Jean Grey.  Definitely a favorite for me.

I also got a kick out of how her hair gradually grew and changed from 1981-1984.  It gets visibly longer and longer each issue until she finally starts pulling it back.

The "best"?

I got Reed as most valuable if that's what is meant by best.
Sue, most powerful if so written.
My favorite, Ben. So much personality and charisma and I lean towards the tanks in team settings.

The kind of thing that really confuses people who struggles with the difference between “comicbook time” and real time.

(Also a manifestation of my having gotten married, and having a living woman to serve as a behavioral model!)
