There are few things more gut wrenching than losing a pet. 18 years was a hell of an innings for a cat. I'm sure it was a happy life as well as a long one.

Sorry for your loss JB.
Our cat lived to be 21 years old and it was the most devastating loss I've experienced to date, my heart goes out to you.

Sorry for your loss, JB.  I know you lost a dear friend.

I dread the day that I will lose my own Clementine.

Flo had been sluggish and not at all herself for the past several days. She'd taken to hiding out in the downstairs bathroom, which is all tiled, and mostly underground, and therefore cool and dark. This dramatic change in her routine was one of the things that tipped me all was not as it should be.

At the vet, as the end drew near, there was a moment of the return of the real Florence. The vet gave her a sedative, to calm her down in advance of the final injection. However, as the sedative was also an injection, Flo turned into a cartoon cat, a whirlwind of howls and squeals and slashing claws. She calmed down once the needle came out, but, unpleasant as the moment was for her, it was almost good, to see a reminder of how she was -- DON'T MESS WITH ME!!! -- at her prime!

I never knew how hard it was to say goodbye to a cat....but now that I have one of my own (Daisy) I can imagine how painful it would be.

My sympathy, JB.

Sorry for your loss.

I lost two cats this year, the Tabby died of cancer and the other of old age.

It was tough when the vet told me the cat only had a few weeks to live, he gave me a choice to put the cat down now, save her some pain or take her home and try to comfort her.

I chose to take her home and give her medication, she lived for three more months but her routine wasn't the same and she did experience some pain.

I had both cats cremated.

I still have one cat and three dogs and when their time comes it will be tough.
