Not sure about Ditko, but Ross Andru really captured 70's NYC during his Spider-Man run, even getting the more obscure areas of the city (like the Rockaways) correct.

"Voices somewhat at odds with Chris' versions. For one thing, my characters neither think nor speak in paragraphs."

Hah, I did notice how much more room there was for artwork on these pages!

Ross was astounding -- and intimidating. As a punk wannabe living in Canada, in the days before Google, the most I could hope for was to capture the feel of the city.

(Just had a D'OH moment. Why did it not occur to me to just SWIPE Ross?!?)

Some of you may know this story:

When Frank Miller was working on the WOLVERINE mini with Chris, he told me that he'd noticed how my art tended to get buried under Chris' verbiage. So Frank decided to leave LOTS of room for copy.

Meanwhile, tho, Chris had noticed how sparse Frank's own scripting style was. He decided to emulate that, and the result was acre upon acre of empty space!

Which self-appointed critics lauded as a bold new style!

Frustration 'R' Us! Reading some HIDDEN YEARS over lunch, and realizing there is SO MUCH MORE I could do, if only this could magically turn into a real series, like NEW VISIONS did. For one thing, touching upon something near and dear to my heart, the time frame would allow an intersection with LOST GENERATION, as happened in XMHY.

AARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WARNING: Let's not have a FANTASTIC 4 EVER scenario repeat itself here. No over-eager Forum members contacting Marvel to demand this become a real book. We all know how well THAT went!!

When Mr. Claremont exercised restraint, he could be magnificent.

But I so much disliked his treatment of the characters post-JB that I soon dropped the book (hung about for the return of Dave Cockrum).

On IRON FIST, Chris made me cry reading a scene I had drawn. And for the RIGHT reasons.

Feeling a mite dissatisfied with the loose pencils on the Grey house, so....

Came out a bit Cockrum-esque, I think.

(Why is it THIS page, I wonder, that is vexing me so cruelly?)

Your frustration increases my admiration for your passion/ work ethic, JB.

I like the revised panel.
