Ah! Methinks I know where this is going now and I love it! Wish I had access to the old FF issue to see if my theory works in that context. If I'm right - big if - I think parts of this may have been repurposed in a very altered form much later (now earlier) in JB's work. Of course the danger of being a John Byrne fan is that he knows how to misdirect and I end up with egg on my face half of the time. Ok, 75% of the time. Looking forward to seeing the story unfold!

I appreciate Cyclops' revised visor, much truer to the original. Slimmer for Slim!••• Scott’s original visor is something a surprising number of artists have difficulty drawing. Dave seemed to be one, and I suspect that informed his decision to change it. (No criticism of Dave intended. When one draws pretty much everything else as well as he did, a bit of fudging here and there is completely excusable.) If anyone is wondering, the trick to Cyclops’ original visor is to draw it as if it is actually embedded in his face and head.

I'll tell you one thing - the sheer amount of scanning involved in posting all these pages is exhausting just to think about.

I really like the darkened scenes in the bedroom. Nice effect to see in pencils•• If that page was for regular publication, I would, of course, have left the darkening to the colorist. Here, in black and white, I felt something extra was needed, especially to make Willy's eyes suitably dramatic.
