For decades, I've used the "water" analogy to explain Cyclops' optic blasts.------------------------
Nerd fight time. How does Cyclops counter the force generated by his optic blasts? Is that part of his mutant power? Most of us can handle a garden hose, but if we open a fire hose full blast we'd get knocked on our keister. If his own optic blast was redirected back at him would he be immune to the force?

Cyclops and Havok have stood up to each other's powers. I imagine Scott can handle his own beams, should they come back at him.Of course, few characters have been as much victims of the whims of writers as has poor Scott Summers, so there's no guarantee of anything. As to how he counters the force, I convinced myself that the beams actually increase in power as they go out. Not logical, I know, but. . . .

As to how he counters the force, I convinced myself that the beams actually increase in power as they go out. --------------------------------- I was thinking the same thing, that the beams gain momentum as they travel from the source. You could put your hands over his eyes and feel pressure, but if you pull away an inch or so the beam would be too strong to contain. Not Spock logical, but comic book logical.

If his own optic blast was redirected back at him would he be immune to the force?----------------------------------- Well the answer of course is since Scott's eyeballs are actually portals to a dimension filled with crimson energy, probably the Cyttorak dimension, the energy just pours out at full force without creating an opposite force against Scott's head since the opposite force would be re-directed through the portal into the energy dimension. This creates a "cushioning effect" that protects Scott's head from flying off when he uses his optic blasts to, let's say, propel himself to gather floating friends or blast through walls. The portals are activated and maintained by the solar energy Scott absorbs.
That, or it just works cause it's really cool

Well the answer of course is since Scott's eyeballs are actually portals to a dimension filled with crimson energy, probably the Cyttorak dimension...

Now I'm thinking of a scene where a bill hundreds of pages in length comes in for Scott Summers from the Cyttorak dimension (and maybe a flame-headed collector with it). "Do you have any idea how much power you've been using Cyc?"

The force of the energy can't be too great up close to the eyes or his glasses/visor would be pulverized or shot off every time he cracked a lid. Or he has the world's strongest ears to hold them. Or it's a comic and it is what it is because that's how it works.

This scene got me thinking that the Danger Room probably has sequences where Scott can practice "steering" in zero G or underwater using his optic blasts for propulsion. He would totally practice that.
