You're most welcome, sir!

As for today's page, it's terrific. I love this story so far, and how true it already feels to the character. Young Logan had a rough start, which only seems fitting. We can already see his rage--but also his courage, and there's even a glimmer of heroism in his desire to protect his mother.

As others have pointed out, this beats the stuffing out of the "official" origin, and we're only three pages in!

Wait, I'm confused.  You mean Logan's mother ISN'T Mac's grand-aunt and "The Professor" who oversaw Logan's adamantium bonding ISN'T Mac's older brother and Logan and Mac AREN'T cousins???

on a more realistic and much more sane note,

There hasn't been a run of comics EVER that has been so amazingly well-crafted, both in art and story.  The emotions of the characters are incredibly tangible.

Quick question that I've always been curious about, is the age difference between Mac and Heather around ten years?

Looking forward to more pages next week.  Great start.  Can't help but compare in my head to what Marvel did (same for many others here I'm sure).  It should be interesting to see where this all goes and the end of this issue should make us all anxious for November from the sounds of it.  We know he survives as this is 'just' his memories but dang will this be an interesting journey.

Yes, about the same as Reed and Sue.

 QUOTE:
Compare the death of Logan’s mother to Uncle Ben, or across the street, the Waynes.

Also deaths in Bambi, Finding Nemo, and a bit more off-screen, Lilo & Stitch... and people keep enjoying these.

I'm glad the scene cuts away to the exterior of the cabin when the violence begins.  So many creators are keen to depict as much onscreen gore and violence as possible. Leaving it up to the readers imagination is often more powerful than showing what is occurring in situations like this.

If he's a mutant, it shouldn't kick in until puberty...

+++

And here lies something that has long annoyed me. All these "hot" writers introducing new elements and twists to the X-Men mythos (like Morrison introducing an evil twin embryo of Xavier's or Hickman more recenty with the mutant Moira) that disregard this puberty threshold. Of course, for them rules are there to be bent, being so cool and all...

I try to play to the puberty rule, but that's not to say there haven't been instances where I've introduced mutant powers earlier than that. Pablo and Ashley, to name two.

In Pablo's case there are as yet unrevealed circumstances at work--recall Jahf's comments--but Ashley is just an "early bloomer". As I think we would have to assume there would be, mutation not being an exact science.

When I was starting at Marvel there were many writers and artists who refused to create new characters. "I'm not going to give Marvel the next Spider-Man!" they would say, as if any of them really had any hope of doing that.*

That mentality persists on some levels, which leads to so much of what Julie Schwartz called "archeology"--digging deeper and deeper into the Past, creating new twists and turns, and in the end often overwhelming the characters with superfluous detail.

* Ironically, the "next Spider-Man" had already been created, Wolverine. It just took a while for anyone to notice.

Showing the beating and murder would take ELSEWHEN into a whole different realm. Not one I'm prepared to explore in this context. (A place for everything, etc...)

I agree that the intro of Cassandra Nova, evil twin embryo was a concept too surreal and innecessary, specially if you also add that we already have the evil brother factor covered with the Juggernaut!
So she's similar to a Shadow King/Juggernaut fussion!
About Moira being retconned as a mutant, well I dislike it but it works to explain past things as Moira being the only non-mutant human infected by the Legacy Virus, Proteus being a very powerful mutant (now he's a 2nd generation mutant),.. but invalidates stories as Days of Future Past!!! She died in that alternate reality killed by the Brotherhood, so that reality should have ended and restarted!!!
Moira's powers appearing with puberty has been clarified!
