Came upon a site describing me as “blacklisted” by Marvel and DC. Y’know, if I flog my memory I can just about get to a place long ago when it would have been inconceivable to me that anyone might not want to work for either company. So I should not be surprised, I guess, that there are still people who think the only reason why I’m not working is that I am being blocked.

It must be really strange for someone of your stature in the business to constantly see false reports and misinformed 'journalists' and bloggers putting this stuff out there. I mean, you're reading about you and in your mind must be going, 'WTF, that's not the case at all!' and someone else can read it and take it as gospel.
Much more prominent in todays social media age.

Twitter comics community is my favorite part of social media lately. The
past five years, in my opinion, thanks to Tom King and Mitch Gerads,
creators have humanized themselves and encourage other creators to come
humanize the industry. Ignorance exists in all genres but, I see less and
less. Just today, Jimmy Palmiotti gushed over JBs Superman reboot.

On page 1 for this topic, I asked the question, “Can anyone imagine what the comic book industry would have been like without John Byrne?”

JB’s response included the following. “Maybe no Dark Phoenix? Maybe a lot less Wolverine. A different Superman reboot for sure.”

This got me thinking about JB’s published work. I put together a list below of just some of the comic book characters that JB either created, cocreated and or designed, I know I missed some characters. There are some very big names on the list. I will always be a fan. JB, thank you.

Sabretooth, Dark Phoenix, Kitty Pryde / Sprite, Emma Frost / White Queen, Dazzler, Guardian / Vindicator, Sasquatch, Aurora, Northstar, Shaman, Puck, Marina, Talisman, Nova, Scott Lang / Ant-Man, White Vision, Herbie the robot, Karma, Jim Rhodes, Bishop, Malcom, Randall, Avatar, Nathaniel Richards, Heather Hudson, Gardener, Daughters of the Dragon, Union Jack 3, Great Lakes Avengers, Mister Immortal, Dinah Soar, Doorman, Big Bertha, Flatman, & Next Men.

Amanda Waller, Bloodsport, Terrax, Sebastian Shaw, Hellfire Club, Mastermind, Shadow King, Titania, D’Spayre, Chthon, Dark Scarlet Witch, Silver Banshee, Wild Child, Diamond Lil, Smart Alec, Proteus / Mutant X, Phoenix 2, Pyro, Destiny, Avalanche, Omega Red, Maverick, Master of the World, Gilded Lily, Pink Pearl, Tundra, Terminus, Malice, Elements of Doom, Aunt Petunia, Kristoff Vernard, Gormuu, Ootah, Mother Superior, Smasher, Sleez, New Metallo, Checkmate, Magpie, & Rampage.

White Vision. After the outrage expressed by the fans when I “ruined” the Vision*, it was most amusing to see that storyline (sorta) woven into WANDAVISION.

————-

* So many fans, unable to figure out for themselves how to resolve some bit of story nastiness, assume the writer(s) haven’t got it figured out either!

Greetings to all. Very long time fan, maybe my first
comment. I'm not sure because I've been lurking for so
long.

Just wanted to relate something on the topic of Elsewhen.

During the lockdown, my adolescent daughter and I read
every single comic book (except Space 1999 and Wheelie and
the Chopper Bunch) drawn by John Byrne. She loved it. Maybe
it was just the time we spent together but at any rate, she
now has two JB posters on her wall.

Last weekend I asked her if she was interested in reading
the X-Men issues after JB left and she was, indeed, into
it. We got up to X-Men 145 (the Doom holding Storm cover).
She observed: "So, Storm just sort of showed up and Dr.
Doom was just like, 'C'mon in?'"

We made it to the end of the issue, laughing at pretty much
every page, not because they were inherently funny, but
because they were ridiculous, and we're just sort of
leaving it at that. No need for us to continue on. As far
as she's concerned, Elsewhen is the real story. The post JB
X-Men, not so much.

Happy belated birthday, JB! And thanks for all the great
work. Be assured that you continue to pick up new fans (and
believe me, my kid can be pretty hyper-critical).

X-MEN after I left became a very different animal. A very successful animal.

As I’ve said many times, I can only assume I was holding Chris back.

Pretty shocking difference between post-JB "X-Men" and "Elsewhen," that's for sure.
