After initially admitting defeat on Far Sector for the readability issues, I stumbled upon my copy of the compact volume the other day and ended up devouring it eagerly.
It's not that the readability issues magically went away - Jamal Campbell is an amazing illustrator and the book is full of visual mic drops, but clean and clear visual storytelling suffers, as it does in many comics artists who push that sheer impressiveness of the drawing, such as J.H. Williams. Readability suffers doubly in this reprint because of the reduced size and the lack of contrast that the matte paper brings.
But: N. K. Jemisin's story just dragged me in on this third attempt and wouldn't let me go. So for a cheap way to read a great Green Lantern story with a wildly fun sci-fi bent and some great social relevance back in the mix? More than worth the bang for the buck. I hadn't read any of her work before, so now I'm going to track down one of her stand-alone prose works and see how I like that (it seems that like a lot of modern genre authors, most of her work is tied up in one series or another). Thankfully, she's got a short story collection, and those are absolutely the best place to start for me.
