Just finished the podcast. Well done, some nice deep dives into personalities and powers. But ending in a deadlock on who's the best just like the forum.
Hold the phone, guess who's going to break the deadlock on the next podcast.......?

This is not a fair question.
Did they do 100 issues of "Two In One" with the Human Torch?
Did Mr. Fantastic get 36 issues of his own series?
Ben Grimm as The Thing is a super-star.
Reed is "Mr. Fantastic Four" and Sue is utterly amazing as revealed by writers and artists interested in what she's capable of.
But I think the fact that I loved She-Hulk in the FF and Ben in his own book and STILL yearned for the Thing to come back home proves Ben is the non-plus-ultra member of the team. There just can't be enough THING.

This is like saying Wolverine is the best member of the X-Men because he had his own title. No.

While I love Reed, because he is such a thinker, the growth She-Hulk had in the FF makes her my favourite. Which is really weird.

Did you read the read the thread title? The Best FF Member. Not the best character that could sustain a title outside their foundation. MEMBER. Meaning, ya know, a part of the team.
If you want to evade the question by obfuscating it, by all means. You be you.

JB made Sue interesting!•• Thanks! When I started at Marvel I was moderately appalled by the floundering around when it came to the writing of Sue. So many who seemed to cling to old notions that she was "useless" as a member of the team. Much of it was pure chauvanism, of course. Writers who didn't want to thrust her into the heat of battle, to show how tough she really was. Almost understandable. Over the span of my career I have from time to time been accused of "violence against women" in my work. But what I was doing was treating female characters exactly as I would male, and sending them out to take their lumps just like the boys did. By the time I became a writer, I felt the days of female characters being primarily used as hostages was long gone.

Reed will always be my favourite. (Which might be why I'm having such a hard time loving the new movie. Try as I might, I couldn't at any point buy Pedro as Reed. But that's a topic for the other thread.)
I LOVED the She Hulk as a FF member though. To the extent that I sometimes wonder what it might have been like, if say Johnny went off with Alicia and retired from the team for a while, whilst The Thing came back. So that it would be Reed, Sue, Jen and Ben.
I know having two 'bricks' on the team might seem redundant. But I would have liked to have seen this mix of personalities for a little bit.

In this instance, I'm going to read (ha) "best" as "most essential," and give the title to Reed.
Ben is easily my favorite member, but when Jen was subbed in during his absence, it was still the Fantastic Four,
When Medusa filled in for Sue, it was still the Fantastic Four .
When Herbie (H.E.R.B.I.E.) took Johnny's place on the old cartoon show, I wasn't happy about it, but it was still the Fantastic Four.
Reed is Mr. Fantastic, and as team leader, it's difficult for me to see the others as the FF without him.

A science-minded friend. many years ago, noted that "Mister Fantastic" is EXACTLY the name a scientist would choose for himself!Reed is, of course, an early example of Stan's naming rules--that if the name does not immediately identify the character--the Thing, the Human Torch, the Invisible Girl/Woman--the reader should be able to pick the character out of the group by a process of elimination. It's a school of thought much trampled upon in recent decades. (There's a tale of Stan seeing the ANAD X-Men and having trouble figuring out who was who. He assumed Storm to be Banshee, and Nightcrawler to be Wolverine.)

I misread the topic as "Best JBF Member" and I was hoping to get a mention. =0)

And Johnny was just sorta… there......... Surprised to hear this considering he was the character closest to the average reader's age and I felt the most was done with him during said run (Frankie, Alicia, etc). I also appreciated the "visual rules" for how to draw his flaming rendition, down to the shape and angle of the flames to the proper highlight of his musculature beneath them.
