Stan and Jack figured out pretty quickly that their audience, primarily kids in school, didn’t really want to read abouta school, so the X-Men graduated. (A decade or so later, the school element having faded almost to nothing, Jim Shooter declared the school to be the most important element, and that Chris and I must play the characters as “students of Charles Xavier”—yes, even those, like Wolverine who had been functioning independently for decades.)
