Ah, yes. Thanks everyone! Guess I wasn’t firing on all cylinders when I wrote that. I thought Tim was suggesting words that weren’t said on the page, and didn’t understand.

I never gave it much thought before but I like the fact that Colossus can change back and forth at will. Most of the strength characters are 'stuck' in their form - Hulk, Thing, Beast. Makes him just a bit more unique

Hadn’t really thought about that either, Paul! The thing that buzzes in my brain about Colossus is why his transformed body has such perfect, mechanical articulations. I’d much prefer a smooth, “living metal” approach. (Dave set himself up for a lot of frustration with that design. SO many artists ignored the fact that the articulation lines contoured to the individual muscles.)

JB, could that theory be along the lines of how Iceman was more Snowman early on and Xavier had him learn to focus his concentration and hone control over his powers to take on a more icy appearance. Maybe Peter has never explored the possibility that he might have more control over his armored form than he realizes?

Smooth metal articulation might indeed look cool - but in the hands of a lesser artist, I fear that it would look like the Silver Surfer with hair.

Colossus could easily look more like the Silver Surfer, maybe Dave Cockrum was afraid of that, especially if Colossus was ever one of those possible Legion designs. He's been a great visual focus character, lots of covers and splash pages. When I saw the new X-Men in an ad before I ever bought one (circa 1979) they all looked pretty different from anything I'd seen before and I probably expected at least a couple to be aliens (I was totally ignorant of the whole mutant concept behind them until buying #131 and Amazing Adventures #4 at the same time).

I am wondering if something is affecting the Professor.
He seems to be doing things, shall we say, oddly.
He sends Peter off either not knowing of Peter's difficulties or in spite of them. He seems to be sending people out recklessly and exposing people unnecessarily.
Is he anxious? Controlled by another force? Insane by the death of his connection with Lilandra? But something is wrong with him here.
The plot deepens.

Colossus without the mechanical articulation might look like a relative of Pylon from TRIPLE HELIX.

I don't see this at all. Aside from not appreciating the pain in Peter's leg, what else is he doing that is reckless or unnecessary?

Sometimes it helps to read the words as you look at the pictures, Brad.
