…colonoscopy….

•••

I’ve resisted all efforts to convince me to have one. It goes with my “cancer philosophy”. If ever I am diagnosed with the Big C, I won’t do anything about it. Play the cards I am dealt.

I hope you have as restful a night as you can have in the hospital JB, and a smooth recovery.

I’ve had a number of surgeries over the years due to Crohn’s Disease. The
procedures themselves never bothered me, my big issue was with the loss
of freedom. Once I had an end date to work towards I could deal with the
excruciating pain that comes post surgery. If it’s any consolation, that first
night is always the worst.

One time I arrived in, closed the curtain around my bed while I mentally
adjusted to my newfound incarceration. Listening to the other patients
talking, all older gentlemen, I was struck by how unconcerned they were
about how long they would be in.

When I emerged from behind the curtain, my question was to a man, met
with “I don’t know”. I set to work on them and by the end of the week, our
ward resembled a scene from One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. If anyone
so much as resembling a doctor set foot inside the door, they were met with
a chorus of “When am I getting out ?” from each and every one of them.

Glad to hear you’re over the worst of it, but remember, hospitals are full of
sick people, you don’t want to catch something, so get a date, work
towards it and get home. Best medicine in the world.

As a 46-year-old who's only 10 years from retirement where I'll draw a six figure pension every year for the rest of my life, with a wife and an 11-year-old kid, both of whom I love more than I thought it was possible to love anyone, cancer is definitely something I'd fight tooth and nail if it ever came to that. But I can respect having a different philosophy, and if I were even approaching my 70's I might have a very different outlook about that.

I had my first colonoscopy May 28, 2024 (at 53, late to the game) and they discovered a tumor the size of a racquetball.

June 17 I had it removed, along with about 14 inches of my colon and all associated lymph nodes.

Turned out to be stage 3, and I spent July–December doing chemo, which wasn't as bad as I thought, but wouldn't want to do it again.

Anyway, nearly 2 years cancer-free now!

You know the fanbase is aging when we start talking about our colonoscopies!

But I'll join - had my first about 4 years ago, and they found a couple of benign polyps which they lanced. Honestly, the whole procedure was far simpler than what I was fearing. Even the "cleanse" - I was given pills to drink with water throughout the day to take care of that, instead of the orange liquid that they gave my wife (her family has a history of colon cancer so the insurance company allowed her to take it earlier than me, so I got a bit of a preview).

I waited far longer than recommended for a colonoscopy. Had my first and only one (yet) last summer. Couple of polyps removed. Otherwise, fine.

Two aspects of it all that had been emphasized to me as certain proved to be untrue in my experience. First, I'd been told that when they knock you out, it's the best sleep of your life. Nope. I had some bad dreams and did not wake up feeling amazingly rested, not a bit. Second, I was not in the bathroom all night long, as I'd be warned, just took the pills, did my business a few times between 5-9 pm the day before and then I was done.
