As much as I enjoy Ordway's work and also enjoyed his work in this example. Byrne's drawn face on Superman is far better than the one that ended up in print. The eyes in the final piece, eyebrows specifically make Supes look mean, which may have been intentional, in Johns Supes is much more impassive.

I'm an advocate of different styles merging in this fashion. Not saying that it's the best just that it's a wonderful event to see two artists combine on a project. The outcome is always interesting, regardless of their combination working or not.

I knew I'd seen some Byrne pencils on CAF that had been inked by different people.  I think there's a 3rd version out there, too.

This illustrates what I meant about different inkers and styles.  I think BOTH are very faithful to Byrne's style and line, but one guy definitely takes some liberties with Cap's face while the other guy seems to try and get more detail in there and even redraws Union Jack's face.

Different inkers - different styles.

I definitely see Mr Byrne's point of view with Ordway.

Perhaps Mr Byrne could explain the proper protocol of inking, etc.   Is it artist's discretion or is it directed by editors, etc.?

Steven, the second image seems to be the original inked before the pencils
were erased.

Problem with Ordway is his art is boring.

I believe that the one minute later Captain America commission was inked using a lightbox, and the owner retains the original untouched pencil version.

Yes -- the owner has the original pencil commission.  To the best of my knowledge, the pencils have never been inked and are intact.  Perhaps it's inked over blue-line and the blue isn't vanishing as it's supposed to in a scan/xerox?   I found it searching CAF -- I'll see if I can find it again and read the description.

A backup story in X-Factor Annual #4. I was pleasantly surprised to see it. Rare to see JB draw the "good" Magneto, too.
